Refurbished Vid card?

Has anyone bought a refurb card from Newegg?

They only come with a 15 day warranty from Newegg...

The good price is so tempting...

I got an 8 meg AGP Rage Mobility and it worked great. It was like $9 shipped. Then I got a Radeon 9800 Pro for $267 shipped last month. The cards still have warranty through the manufacturer, so i'm not at all worried! Still, there is risk envolved and it's not for everyone.

They go SUPER fast. You have to camp on the site. It took me about a week to hit it at the right time to get the card. Actually, I got my wife to get it for me while I was at work.

Rudy,

My wife got me a Sapphire Radeon Pro 9800 128 mb (non-ultimate edition) for $267. It came bare card in a box, which is fine with me--I don't really need an svideo cable or the DVI adaptor as I don't use 2 monitors or TV.

I used to work returns for a computer wholesaler and here's what happens with them: the end user returns a defective card to newegg. They return it to the manufacturer. The manufacturer tests it, repairs or replaces it with another repaired (or rarely new) card. They send that card to newegg, which does NOT test it, and puts it up on their refurb board.

Newegg also would put any "opened" item that is restocked and reported non-defective by an end user there. MANY other vendors would just put it on the shelf and sell it as a new item, however Newegg is just a cut above the rest!

SO that's what you get when you buy a refurb. Many manufacturers do a good job testing and/or repairing. Many do not. There is a risk if you don't thoroughly push your card.

MY Radeon is 99 percent stable. It has good RAM, and looked clean when I got it. I think the problems that I run into stem from a combination of things unrelated to the card. In my experience ATI cards are finicky when it comes to overclocking the AGP bus, and my older board does not have an AGP/PCI divider. Also, the games I run into artifacting problems with are mostly new--new games=problems for drivers. This along with the buggy DX9 releases that MS has put out, I believe account for a couple of my problems.

Anyhow, if I DO run into a serious problem, the Sapphire cards have like a 3 year warranty--so I'm not really worried about it! Hope this helps. There's NO WAY I could have afforded the 9800 pro if it wasn't a refurb. It was still a bit above my budget, but....

BTW, I have NEVER seen a 9800 np in the newegg refurbs. I don't know why. That's the card I really wanted. If you do go new, that's the one I'd recommend. DON'T get the 9800 SE. It's slower than a 9700 non-pro from what I've read.

Good luck!

Cursor,
I thought you only get a 15 day warranty from Newegg. So how and where did you get the three year warranty from the manufacturer?
If it has a 3 year warranty, I would surely get it!! I'l camp night and day to get one ...hehe

I just bought a refurb 9800 pro BBA at Newegg, card is fine, only thing I can say is make sure the 9800 has a clean unshared Molex xonnection from the PSU, maybe that will make you go from 99% to 100%

yea the ATI cards seem to be power hungry...my old Radeon 8500 would only run on a good PSU. It won't run on my weak Turbolink PSU. The older nvidia geforce 2 will run on this older PSU of mine though.

Theres a program people use that monitor Newegg refurb when the listing get added, it notifies them by email

I had it but lost it when I formatted as I forgot to back that program up. I'll see if I can find it for you.

It varies by manufacturer, but just because Newegg backs away after 15 days doesn't mean that the manufacturer doesn't need to honor their warranty policy. I have a newegg refurb motherboard that flaked out after a few months and have RMA'd to the manufacturer. Just keep your purchase date info handy (it's at newegg.com in your purchase history for convenience), and you shouldn't have ANY trouble. Newegg's site does not specifically address this, but if you're really worried, email their customer service and ask! If you do that, be sure to let us know what they say.

FYI here is the newegg refurb policy. It's good for everyone to read it before they take the plunge. I think it's pretty straightforward and honest:
Quote:
Newegg.com does not test any product, including refurbished items. Refurbished components are therefore only tested by the original manufacturer. Due to the varying quality of manufacturer testing, YOU ARE TAKING A RISK BUYING REFURBISHED PRODUCTS. Refurbished items are OPEN BOX products that contain components that have previously been owned by other clients and returned to Newegg.com. These products are sold considerably under cost.

Newegg.com guarantees all refurbished products for 15 days. CPUs, however, must be returned within 7 days for refund. All refurbished merchandise should be considered OEM "barebone" parts. Barebone means Newegg.com can only guarantee the item by itself, no other accessories. Despite what the product's description indicates, refurbished merchandise may not include all of the accessories mentioned on our website or the manufacturers. Newegg.com is therefore limited to the barebone part of the item itself. Please do not be upset or surprised if a refurbished product does not contain any cables, manual, software, drivers, fan, et al. Newegg.com will not send you any missing accessories, even if it is an essential part.

Newegg.com certainly does not like to discourage sales, but only experienced pc enthusiasts should consider refurbished items that know how to deal with possibly missing accessories. Please only purchase refurbished products if you are willing to resolve defects and/or know how to obtain missing accessories.

Refurbished items are not for dealers. We therefore reserve the right to cancel any applicable orders which may violate this warning. We are simply discouraging those who want to take advantage of this program as it is aimed towards the end user.

Refurbished products do have considerable higher return rate than brand new items. If you are just looking to get a good deal, please only buy new products.

YOU ARE TAKING A RISK BUYING REFURBISHED PRODUCTS.

i got my ti4800se, it arrived in 3 days to iowa, and have had 0 problems with it.

the only card i probably wouldn't buy is an all-in-wonder since there are alot of essential parts like a remote, ir sensor, etc, that could be missing. i saw that very deal on the 9800pro, still too rich for my blood.

i would go with refurbs though if they are in your price range its a great chance to get a GREAT DEAL

I hear what you are saying Rutkus. I did buy a 9700Pro AIW from newegg for 235 shipped. I thought great deal. It came with nothing though I havnt had problems with it but it would be nice if it was packaged with some goodies. As for regular video cards, I would buy refurbished in a heartbeat. they are an awesome deal. the AIW is up to you.
