OEM CPU Stepping?

Can the stepping of the CPU be seen through the OEM packaging.
Or is it only once the packaging is opened that the stepping can be seen?
I am asking because I want to go to some CPU vendors and make sure I get a good stepping CPU.

Last time I checked "oem" packaging was just a small, clear clamshell. You can check the stepping from there, unless the code is under the molded AMD, then its a bit hard to read.
