which headphones

im trying to decide between sennheiser 280pros, sony mdr-v6's, and sony mdr-v600's. the only ones ive actually listened to were the sony mdr-v600's at bestbuy and they sounded pretty damn good even on a portable cd player. i heard the sony mdr-v6's were good and so are the sennheisers. all these headphones are around $100. i have a philips accoustic edge right now(will get A2 in the future) and i game a lot and listen to music a little. which headphones would be good for me?

Personally I would go for the Sennheiser HD-280 Pros. Some other options would be Grado SR-60 and SR-80.

Don't know how good the Sony's are since I never heard them. The Sennheiser 280 Pros on the other hand, are one of the best sound cancelling headphones prosumer level. These things cancell almost all sound. Say someone is vacuuming (or a vantec tornado on full blast :P) right next to you, wearing the 280's you will barely hear it or not at all! Excellent sound quality as well.

As far as the Sony's go get the mdr-v6's over the mdr-v600's. The guys over at headfi.com think the 600's are some of the worst headphones ever so just play it safe and grab the v6's.

Speaking of Head-Fi, there was someone over there that did a comparison between two of the headphones you're looking at. You can check it out here.

*edit: oh, and don't forget that people who wear glasses(like myself) find that the noise cancelling ability of the 280's doesn't work all that well since you won't get a totally closed surface between your head and the cans.

Grados are some great cans but as was already mentioned the Sennheiser 280 pros sound great and have awesome noise isolation.

A while back I was in the market for new headphones to use at work because I was so easily distracted by all the noise. I found that the -32db of noise isolation that the 280 pros gave was fantastic and it didn't come with the drawbacks of noise cancelling headphones. I didn't feel like I was giving up anything in the sound quality department either as I almost expected when blocking out office noise was my biggest requirement.

As with any set of good headphones make sure to reserve judgement on the 280s until you have broken them in for a good amount of time (like 60+ hours).

Those sony headphones you mentioned are DJ headphones. They lack clarity found in audiophile headphones. If I were you I'ld get a pair of Grado SR-80 or SR-125 Headphones. They're the best you can get for under $200($100 & $120 respectively). They beat out the Sennheisers and they're simply awesome. I have the SR-80 and I love them. The 125 have a little more clarity and even more bass. www.headphone.com sells them for good prices. Google either headphone and you'll find nothing but good reviews. I highly reccommend the Grado Labs SR-80 and SR-125 headphones.

The Grado's are very nice and I love how they look like $10 headphones from the 1970's then people listen to them and their opinion changes.

after reading this thread i searched for grado phones and found a good place. http://www.goodcans.com . they also sell a 1/4 to 1/8 adaptor so you can get the 125's (1/4 jack) and listen to it in any portable device or PC (1/8 jack). only problem with grados is that they focus on sound quality more then anytihng. they are an open phone which sound better but offer less sound cancelation and more leakage. on the good side the grado 125's ($130) beat out sennheiser 5series ($300) as far as sound quality goes.

Depends on your tastes.
I would take the balance of the HD-280's over the bright with no bass Grateo's any day.
You could always take a trip to your local Swee****er's store and audition these cans.

Edit: ?no store names allowed here?

All of these high quality headphones have 1/4" connectors on the end, right? If so, how do you connect them to your computer (without a 1/4 -> 1/8" adapter, which I find really annoying, and lowers sound quality b/c of a bad connection - gives a hissing sound)? The only sound card I've seen with a 1/4" jack is the Audigy 2 Platinum, with the drive bay that has a 1/4" jack.

I have never noticed a problem with the jack converter but maybee I am lucky or have a good one . You kind of answered your own question since unless your soundcard has the proper jack you are gonna have to use a converter.

The Grateo's mentioned in this thread need an adapter the Sennheiser's don't.
FWIW this Grado adapter is about the best one available.

So the Sennheisers and the other high quality headphones mentioned do NOT use 1/4" jacks? Interesting, I thought all professional-grade headphones would.
