overclocked athlon cooler

What's a good CPU Cooler for an overclocked AthlonXP 2800+ 2.083 GHz Barton CPU? Im looking for an ATX form factor, and something under 45dB.

Thermalright has the best heatsinks for AMD procs. The slk-900u is the best and the slk-800 is also really nice but supports only 80mm fans instead of the 92mm fans that the 900 supports. Also the sk-7 is a great HS. Its performance is slightly behind the slk-800 but it is much cheaper. Couple any of those with a good fan and you are golden. Some like to use a thermaltake smartfan II so that they can adjust the volume to their tastes.

I have a fan controller, would that work with fans w/o built-in speed control?

yes it will, it works by adjusting the voltage that you send to the fan.

Harsh! I'm looking at the SLK 800-U with a Blue LED case fan. Just a normal lil' fan. If it doesn't work, I'll replace it with something with big power behind it. Thanks!

yeah the slk-800 will work pretty decent with an led case fan, as long as you aren't ocing a whole ton. With a good HS like that you can run a very low cfm fan and still maintain good temps.

How much OC'ing do you think I could do on an Athlon 2.083Ghz Barton with just an LED 80mm fan and a SLK-800? i.e. in Mhz...

I would go with the new Swiftech MCX462-V available at www.sidewindercomputers.com. That will give you exceptional performance at good noise levels, it is moderately priced at $50 plus a fan.

Thank You,
Daniel
