Browser homepage resets after reboot

I was over at someone's apartment the other day to teach him how to do a basic website (so basic that I was able to work entirely in notepad but I digress). While I was there, he asked me about another problem he is having with his computer. Something he did a couple of weeks ago changed his home page in IE (to a pron site). I changed it back for him but as soon as the computer reboots the pron site is his home page all over again.

He has a copy of adaware (6.something) that does not find anything on his computer. I did not ask about any AV software while I was there because I cannot get any useful information out of the guy on how this happened.

Can anyone tell me where in win/98 this type of nonsense could hide?

Might be a registry thing. I think there is a place in the registry where you change your homepage, maybe if you change it there it will stay. Just a guess, not really 100% sure though. Good Luck!

This can be caused when the OS has trouble writting to the registry. generally from corrupte\d system files or whatnot. my recommendation is reinstall (since 9x doesnt have a file checker to replace system files) This is sorta the equivilant of the battery on your mobo diying and therefore having to reset BIOS settings on every startup. its time to replace the OS. And this is common with 9x

Yes, like Crash said, download AdAware and maybe SpyBot to make sure you don't have any spyware hiding on the computer.

FYI, I had this happen at work. But that was because the domain login scripts reset it everytime I logged in.

The solution was to change the homepage, then export the branch in the registry to a .reg file. I then put a batch file in the startup folder that merges the .reg file and overwrites the login script's homepage.

PM me if you want help or more info.
