Hy guys,
Long time no see. I have got a question that I know you PC gurus will definately know.

-How do erase the auto-complete history in Internet Explorer? My GF thinks I'm a total pervert that looks at porn all day because she see's these addresses that try to auto complete. (I swear, I've actualy only been to 3 of those sites... OK like 1/2 of them :p ) I tried everything to get rid of them. I erased my cookies, temporary files, cleared the SSL cache and they still pop up any time I start typing anything in the address bar??

How do I get rid of this? I could turn off the auto complete but I like using it.

thanks

It should get deleted if you open IE and got to tools and then internet options then click delete files (in the middle of the window). It always works for me. Try clearing history too. I'm not sure what to do if none of that works though.

In the Auto Complete settings in Internet Options, it states that to clear the Auto Complete web addresses, clear history with the General tab of Internet Options.

So Champdog's suggestion should do it.

I tryed that again...UGH

I cleared the history on the general tab,
deleted temporary internet files,
deleted cookies,
restarted windows to a older date,
cleared the "Clear Forms" under the Content section then under advanced,
read the message under Auto Complete that says to press the clear history button and cleared it again after doing all of this just to be sure, pressed OK all the way out to make sure everything I did went through,
Set the clear history button to "0" days so it goes away immediately and then tried all of this all over again with it set at "1" days just to be sure that "0" doesn't mean never erase...,

AAAAARRRRGGH Why isn't this deleting?

Does someone know where these files are kept? I went through my entire hard drive searching for them in the "Internet Explorer" files and I could not find them. I remember when I had Win Me and you could see the file that held all of this but I don't think WinXP has it because I searched everywhere.

Everytime you look up porn. FORMAT. :p j/k My g/f gets mad also.....ever thought about dual-booting? Windows XP Professional Porn and Windows XP Professional Regular. :p

There is an application called tweak UI that was coded by microsoft developers that basically just gives a user interface to play with some hidden features within windows. This is off of memory since I have not had tweak UI Installed for some time but I believe there was a paranoia tab that had all sorts of settings that would clear document history, history of urls etc etc automatically for you. It would do it each time a user logged into the machine (or logged off cannot recall).

Here is a link to what I think is the current version of it:
http://www.microsoft.com/ntworkstation/downloads/PowerToys/Networking/NTTweakUI.asp

PS: If you are gunna download porn I suggest 2 seperate user accounts on the machine so you get your own history and such ;)

I don't care about looking at the porn LOL. I just wanna get rid of these old addresses.

I looked at the Link for the Tweak... It's not for WinXP. Also, I found the History folder hiding in the Temp Folder as a .dat file. I deleted that and it still did not erase the auto-complete.

I figured you guys would would have already run into this situation being the uber-gods of computers and all... Man this sucks. I don't wanna have to re-intall or format anything.

(The funny thing is, is that all this stuff used to get erased when I would click on clear history?? I think one of these last few updates over the last year changed things somehow maybe?)

Deleting the history has always done it for me

Try using another browser for stuff you don't want her to see =p

You could download Mozilla Firebird and use that instead. You don't even have to install it. Download, unzip, and run! She'll never know it's there

Thanks for the program Deathknight. Unfortunately it does not include that paranoia feature you spoke of.

I think I am going to try to re-install IE and maybe the clear history button will work again? It's worth a try I guess...

OK, I just got off the phone with a Dell customer service rep. They have no idea why it's not working. I am looking on Microsofts webpage and reinstalled the service pack 1 but that did not work either. I can't find the full install of IE6 anywhere though?

This sucks.

On the top of the an IE window go to "Tools" then "Internet Options" Click the "Content" tab in the "Personal Information" area click the "AutoComplete" button then under the "Clear AutoComplete History" area then click the " Clear Forms" Button, vola you have no more auto complete :) And in the box above you can get rid of AutoComplete all together.

Thanks Mr.$T$ but I am beginning to think this is some kind of bug or something? I have already tried all of that and the previous pages still won't go away.

The only way I have goten rid of it is by shutting off the auto-complete which I don't want to do.

Some porn sites actually run scripts on you machine that plant code that cannot be replaced by nothing less then a format. Basically meaning you got had :( Even some sites hack your computer to permently set your homepage to there site.

Also to prevent this all together have you thought of a different Browser, I use Netscape which I find very easy to use and it even has downloadable skins which is really cool. Also there is Oprea and that is IMO the closest thing to Iexplore you can get, and your favorites are importable to either browsers, I heard good things about Mozilla but never used it.

But anyways sorry about the "bug" or anything else. In this thread I have seen almost every possable way to fix it, but one thing might work, If you are willing you could poke around in the registry (Type regedit in the run) do some searches and it is possable you can find what you are looking for :eh?:

Try deleting the Address Bar entries manually from within the Registry...Start | Run | Type regedit and click OK | Expand the following branch:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER | Software | Microsoft | Internet Explorer | TypedURLs

Delete any URL's in the RH pane that you'd like to remove from the Address Bar, by right clicking the entries and selecting "Delete" (If you delete any entries, make sure you keep the consecutive numbering scheme...url1, url2, etc. by renaming the "Value name"'s accordingly). :)
