I have one stick of 512mb ocz pc3500 cas 2.0. Do I need to buy the same stick or can I get away with another manufacturer with the same speeds and ratings for the dual channel in my epox 8rda?

You'll be limited by the slower of the two sticks.

Generally having two of the same kinda sticks is done in hopes of minimizing the difference between the two so you're not wasting the abilities of the faster stick. When you see dual packs then most often you're paying for this similarity. Some manufacturers may test to see if they're nearly equal performance but it may well be marketing hype, probably depends on the quality of the manufacturer. A number of folks (myself included) just buy two indentical sticks and eliminate any extra charge for the "dual pack" label. :D
