What Happened to My Windows XP?

(not sure if this is the proper place for this but...)
Today, i turned on my computer that i built about a month ago like usual, went to the kitchen, got something to eat, came back, opened the door expecting to see the usual blue windows xp loggin screen ...but... i walk up to the computer and see a black screen. I could hear the harddrive working but there was no display. So i figured there must have been some problem with the monitor so i plugged in a different monitor, tried again and what i saw was that after the basic configuration display during startup, it gets to the windows XP startup screen and when it is supposed to go into the blue loggin screen, it just goes black. I have no idea what the problem could be. PLEASE, if anyone has experienced something like this before, help me with this thing because i have no computer now.

When you boot into safe mode, do you have a picture, or is it still black?
