Max?

what is the max speed you can o/c with decent but not OTT cooling for these chips. With any memory and mobo. the highest speeds possible.

P4 2.4 @800FSB
P4 2.6 @800FSB
P4 2.8 @800FSB
P4 3.0 @800FSB
P4 3.2 @800FSB

AMD XP 3200+ @400FSB
AMD XP 3000+ @400FSB
AMD XP 2500+ @333FSB

I need a new chip not dont have a clue what to get.
A simple answer would be nice E.g..

P4 2.4 @800FSB = 3Ghz with PC3500 and using Asus P4P800 Deluxe

Hope you can help...thanx

Forget the price range, but the cooling will be kept to a water rig for $350 ish

2.6C @ 3.8 with water (possibly Peltier) on an Abit IC7-MAX3 or EPoX 4PCA3+ with 2x256MB GeIL PC4200 RAM

That OC is very possible, but not guaranteed. Each chip is different.

There is no simple answer and there is no guarantees in overclocking.

Generally the 2.4C and 2.6C will average about 3.2 +/- on stock cooling if you don't have to raise voltage up much. Right now the 2.6C is a good deal with the recent price drop and it does very well with PC3500 RAM. As for mobo, either Abit or Asus will work good.

On the AMD side of the coin, it's hard to beat the Abit NF7 and XP2500+ combination for value. It might not perform quite as well as an Intel system, but it's a good bang for the buck.

Well, depends on your budget. A simple CPU change would be cheap and go a long way in your situation. But, building a good Intel system will probably beat all but the AMD FX51. How much cash do you have to throw around and what is this system going to be used for? If it's for gaming, then upgrade your CPU to a XP2500+ and spend the rest on the best vid card you can afford.

Roughly i have about $600 to get a new mobo, ram, cpu and a relitivly cheap water cooling sys. I'll worry about a gpu another day.
So with the likes of Ebay im hoping i can build a nice o/c'd rig.

hmm, well if your in the UK i'm not sure about prices, but in the US, Good watercooling will be 200, that leaves 400 for mobo/cpu/RAM....your gonna have troubles getting anything more than a 2.4 or 2.6C with good memory. at newegg 2.6C/IS7/2x256 of buffalo PC3700 would be 400. However, in the UK with prices higher your going to have to scrap the WCing idea or go AMD...and if you got AMD buy a good stepping XP1800, they perform on par with OC'ed 2500+'s and are cheaper.

i would get a decent overclocking mobo with good voltage options, good cheap ram (buffalo pc3700 winbond chips), and a cheap cpu

like an Abit NF7-S, 2x256mb buffalo pc3700 w/ winbond chips, 2500+

or an Abit IC7, 2x256mb buffalo pc3700 w/ winbond chips, 2.4C

Thermaltake Aq2 for $134 @ www.overclock.co.uk

ASUS P4P800 Deluxe mobo for $152 @ Ebay

1024MB PC3200 400 MHz DDR MEMORY for $187 @ Ebay

Quote from the seller.

All i can see in the pic is PNY? if that means anything to you lot.

Thats $653 in total which i can stretch to.

Everything sounded good until you got to the RAM. You need better RAM than that PNY crap.

For that price you'd be better off looking on newegg.com or shopping pricegrabber.com or pricewatch.com, from what I've read the OCZ isn't the greatest for overclocking. Go for the Buffalo from newegg or if you really want nice stuff get some Mushkin or Corsair, with the Mushkin being your best bet (Level II Black all the way!!!).

You are considering buying off ebay - are the sellers all located in the UK and you are converting pound sterling prices into US dollar prices? If not then obviously there will be shipping costs associated there too. A cheaper alternative to consider would be to plug in a XP1800 Tbred or XP2500 Barton into that Asus mobo of yours along with some quality Ram and overclock it .

I have some of that OCZ PC3500 EL RAM and it does quite well. This screen shot was taken with my 2.4C running at 3.3 gig (275 FSB) using the 5:4 memory ratio. Look at the RAM timing, you can't get much tighter than that in dual channel mode. This was on air, but not stock, I was using a Swiftech cooler.

You should be able to find some A-Data RAM over there in the UK. That's some nice RAM.

Someone help find this guy some better prices then EBAY at uk. I would recommend newegg which has the cpu cheaper then ebay usually but you live in Europe. The reason you dont want to go ebay on cpus is because you want the latest cpu date because your OCing. From my experience, I sell not so good ocing chips on ebay!

First question is what are you using this machine for?

Gaming and office stuff (internet word) go with AMD.

Encoding and 3d stuff go with intel
