1 stick of ram faster then 2? (n00b)

Say if I had x2 256mb ddr pc4000 corsair
and 1 single stick of 512mb ddr pc4000 corsair

Would the single stick on it's own perform faster in games then x2 256?

Thanks

Not if you have a chipset (nForce2, Intel 865/875) with a dual channel memory controller. Makes more difference in Intel systems, but 2x256 in each channel should be faster than 1x512.

there is one solid gain for 2 sticks of ram... that would be if one is broke you can always test the other.. if you only have one stick...well you have to go buy another to see if it is your ram toast,, and not the mobo or what ever else may be wrong

Might be something real basic that I have overlooked, but I cannot overclock past 190 fsb with two sticks of ram. If I take either one stick out, I get to 200 fsb easy.
