got a 2.4c SL6Z3- help me find a killer DDR for it..

i have a 2.4c coming this saturday. it's been running at 3.6 at the previous owner's rig..

so for 300 FSB, i assume the ratio i will be using will be 5:4

.. now help me find a gig of killer DDR for it..should i get the black mushkin 3500 level II, corsair xms 3500, OCZ 4200 , OCZ 3500 platinum or OCZ 3700 gold?

im going to mod the vdimm..

any suggestions?

Your gonna need the extra volts from volt moding to get BH-5 memory to ~240MHz (in order to run ~300MHz FSB 5:4). Not all BH-5 memory will get this high, even with 3.2V, but it's the best chance to run ~DDR480 at 2-2-2 timings. If your extra risky, you could try to give it ~3.3V+, if you can, which could bring ~DDR500 speeds with 2-2-2 timings.

Though you might not get 300MHz FSB with air cooling, though the M0 steppings are quite capable overclocking with low vCore.

Yeah, that's going to be really tough to do with PC3500 BH-5 RAM. You might consider sacrificing a little bit in RAM timings and look at the OCZ PC3700 Gold. They should have no problem hitting those speeds and you can still get fairly decent timings with them.

.....OCZ 3700 EL Gold is out of production for a little while now. I don't think you will find it, I would go with the Mushkin 3500 level II.........I see you have 2 H/D's, will you be running raid? Most cannot get to 300fsb because you start to lose the agp/pci lock around 295 with this mobo unless you use ClockGen..........

Eh? I thought one of the big advantages of using the 875 chipset was that the Intel raid controller was off the PCI bus? I am getting ready to pull the trigger on a new P4C800 - E Delux system that will use 2 Raptors in SATA Raid 0 on the ICH5 and 2 WD 250GB SATA Raid 1 on the PCI controller. Will this be a problem at 292 to 300 FSB?

I was planning on doing the Vdimm mod on the ASUS... If I run into trouble at 2-2-2 can I get it to run with relaxed timings or will I be forced to go to us the 3:2 divider? How much would performance suffer if I did go to 3:2?

It almost sounds like I might be better with a higher multiplier.

Good thread!

Get urself some XMS pc3500c2 v1.1 winbond bh-5. Mine as well as a few other member got there up beyond 240 5:4 2,2,2,5 with 3.2v-3.3v.

Mine currently running at 247(494) 1:1 2,2,2,5 @ 3.3v 100% memtest86 stable of over 24hrs.

Now all I need is a proc that can take me up to 300fsb or more so I can take advantage of this ram. Unfortunately my current proc can only do 281-282fsb 100% prime95 and memtest stable.

.......many are finding that the agp/pci lock( which your ICH5 also locks with) is getting lost around 295fsb. With raid many have to stop at 295 but when tested with a ata 133 drive they get to 320fsb. Raid and/or sata does not like to be overclocked at all. The same goes with the ATI cards, you can clock higher with an old video card.........Using CockGen is 1 way of avioding the 295 bug. For me I rather have the Raid 0 with my Raptors at 293 then without it at 300fsb...............

Of course, there is no guarantee of 300 FSB with the 2.4C, in fact the majority of them can't go that high. I think average is more like 3.2 to 3.4 gig on air. I'm convinced that the 2.6C is a better match for most PC3500 RAM. I was only able to get 275 FSB (3.3 gig) out of my 2.4C using OCZ PC3500 EL RAM at the 5:4 ratio with tight timings (but I'm limited to a vmem of 2.8v).

Thanks for the input guys!
I was not aware of the PCI/AGP SATA issues. It sounds like I should be able to meet my target of 292 (3.5GHz) and still be able to use RAID and ATI 9800 PRO, given that I can find a 2.4C M0 that will clock that high!
I guess plan B, if I cant make it work, will be to eBay the 2.4C and go for a high multiplier chip which wont bench as well, but will allow use of the SATA Raid Arrays.
or plan C, buy Thumper's system which is basically what I am looking to build!
Well off to NewEgg and ZipZoomFly...
Thanks again!

I had some Kingston HyperX PC3500 running at 3:2 and was able to hit 285 with my 2.4C, so I'd recommend nothing else than Kingston branded memory. Cheaper than Corsair, and better IMHO.

just finished vmem modding my Ic7 last nite(what a pain).i have some pc4000 that'll run 290 and277 at 2.78v. see what kind of speed the additional voltage will produce. in addition im gonna get some bh5 sticks -see how well they run with massive voltage hitting their guts. should be an interesting 1-1 and 5/4 comparison
