What variable type am I looking for?

What variable type am I looking for?

I'm trying to make a program in C++, but can't seem to find the variable type I want (or know how to create a new type)...

It should be about 64-bits (minimum 42-bits), and must be an integer since I'm performing modulos on it (Borland compiler refuses to allow modulos on floating point variables).

Sorta, only bigger

Returned from sizeof()
int -> 4 bytes (32-bit)
long -> 4 bytes (32-bit)
double -> 8 bytes (64-bit)

What I need is an integer type (can't be floating point like double) that is 8 (or more) bytes long. I haven't heard of one, so was hoping somebody here knew of one.

...Or knows how to define a custom variable type that will work

well the var type __int64 exists in VC++

i actually have a var type that i made that can handle infinite digits(within the limits of the memory space of course), but it is slow at large operations. i could give it to you on wendsday.

Sweet man!! It works great Now I just have to figure out if it's automatically shrinking the variable to 32-bits since there's a BIG speed difference (~8x) once you pass the size of 32-bit numbers in it...

Type that can handle infinite digits... Hmmmmmm... Wonder if I could use it to finally determine what 256^307200 is

::edit:: ok more than a few minutes. its at 256^12829 at 2:37 (min:sec) and its going to slow down as it gets further

well after 8:23:37 my program is only on 256^173979 and it takes up 4mb of system memory. so it isnt very effiecent. im working on sliming it up though.

Are you doing modulo arithmetic? If so, determining powers of a number is considerably easier.

God-knows why someone would need to know what 256^307200 is, especially since it has 739,962 digits. I don't think I'll be posting it here.

(Oh, it took 10 seconds to calculate in Maple)

... though if it does, me thinks I'll have to download it!

256^307200 = The number of possible 640x480 pictures that can exist at 256-color (you might say that those pictures contain EVERYTHING that could have it's picture taken of under ALL lighting conditions ).

Once I finally find a way to calculate full precision for that, my next goal is 1024x768@32bpp

Now that you know how many possible patterns there are, write a program to generate all of them as JPGs. Then send me all the ones that look interesting.

I started working on one that would do all 320x480@16-color, but it was so painfully slow that I never ran it very long

Doing it on 640x480@256-color would be downright horrible! Even if you could go though 1 Trillion Trillion Trillion Trillion pictures/second, you'd still have to wait for 10^48 / 256^307200 (about 256^307180) seconds to get through them all.
