I know you guys are busy.....but I need a guru =)

This is what I posted below.....

whelp....I've been reading for about 2 weeks now, just about anything I can find on overclocking. Last night I made the big leap and decided not to be a coward any longer. I took my P3 733 FC 133fsb on an ASUS P3V4X to 825. I ran the voltage up from 1.65 (stock) to 1.70 and only adjusted the multiplier. The temp went up about 13 (now about 118) degrees f but I only have a stock 1 fan cooling system on my processor....and like most computer geeks I never have the covers on my case.
My question is....I'm pretty good with my hands and considering building a water cooling system (yes I'm aware of the consequences should a leak occur) and I'd really like to take my processor up 200 mhz or so.

Do I need a water cooling system for that kind of boost....and if not will just a dual fan cooler work on my processor?

Thanks in advance.

Oh btw....I got a little over excited about this whole thing and took my P3 500 running Advanced server up to 560 just for kicks, but I'll probably leave that on alone. Now I'm eyeing my mother's AMD K62 266 thinking I can get a gig or 2 out of it! Someone stop the madness!!!!!!

Date: Dec 20, 2000 on 03:11 p.m.

These were my responses......

Well...Overclockin will do strange things to a person .... You mentioned you only OC'd the Multiplier? Are you insinuating you have an unlocked cpu??? Did the bios reflect the speed change???

Why not try overclocking it as much as it can with whatever cooler you have on it? That way it's easier to say, if water-cooling is worth the shot. Try taking it higher, and see how it goes!
Normally you only attach one fan (and not two) to the heatsink, when you have a FC-PGA CPU. If you want a good air-cooler, get an Alpha or something like it, and if you don't mind experienting a bit, there is also the peltier-solution.

You might have problems getting the gig, because you CPU is a "B" = 133MHz FSB, which doesn't give you enough headroom.

Good luck, anyway!

and my final response.......

I've got the multiplier set to 5.5 and the fsb is 150 but I can set it as high as 166. I'm just worried how much heat is too much. Where's my breaking point? now it runs around 116-118 degrees f....is 130 or 150 where I should start considering a better cooling system?
I went to my local vendor today and picked up a spiral type fan....bout $9 but so far haven't seen any difference....it's not a bit cooler than before but giving the soft conductor time to melt to the heat sink before I check it again.

Now......

No difference in temp with the new fan....is 118 degrees f something to worry about? I really am not interested in "maxing" it out but would like a good bang for my buck. I've noticed my video flickering a bit when my TV is on (same outlet on wall) and am concerned I'm overheating that as well.....clueless what to do next and the lack of response will assure me I'm running fine now and just leave it alone.

System specs:
P III 733 FC running at 825 now
256 megs of non ecc Kingston 133 fsb memory
Soundblaster live
VooDoo 3 3000 w/TV out
Western Digital 40 gig ATA 100 (yea I know my board is only 66)
couple of Intel nics.....and that's about it.

I appreciate the time it took for you to read this message....I know I talk too much! =)

Should you have network issues please buzz me in the networking area of the forum.

wow. I don't know how the hell you are able to change the multiplier, but if you did...you are damned lucky! I watercool and will still be watercooling until the day I die...unless they come out with something cheaper for me... I got a CUSL2, P3-700@1262,128MB PNY Ram, and a BeCooling waterblock which I modified. Anyways, yeah sure get into watercooling. That's all I can say right now because I didn't read all of the way through your post!

(Second Note)
Ohh yeah, rip that damned heatsink tape off of your heatsink you bought and get some thermal paste from Radio Shack. Trust me, it's WAY the hell better then that POS thermal pad. Hope it helps!

As much as I love water-cooling - you should have no problems taking her up 200MHz with just a good HS&F. I recommend an Alpha. definitely dump your stock HS&F. Good Luck!

Built a watercooling system today......

Still havn't answered my question tho.....hehe

what temp should I start worrying about the processor being overheated at? I changed my stock Fan with a spiral type thingy "Thermaltake" and my temp went UP 5 degrees f. Runs around 123 average now. Oh....and should I rely on the bios Temp reading or should I get a real therm sensor?

wow thats awsome. A newb to overclocking asking the gurus when flashback to today he is one, and a mod at that.
