Crazy temps on my p3 500....?

OK this is really wierd. I was about to start overclocking today (I'm new at this) and I check my temperature on my CPU with mbm 5 and it says 70Celcius. So I tried another program same thing and two others along with the bios gave me the same thing. I haven't even overclocked the thing yet, there's two other hd's in there (5400rpm and 7200rpm) and a graphics card (v3 3000) but that's it. Anyone know why I'm getting these temps? Is the thermostat broken?
my specs:
Asus p3b-f
p3 500
192mb pc100
win98

thanks Padra

Probably not a good connection to the heatsink from the cpu die- crooked/canted. Or EXCESSIVE thermal compound. Is the fan running? Any case ventilation?

No case ventilation yet. The fan is running, thing is i haven't touched my fan or cpu since I bought the computer so how could it get crooked? I didn't mount the thing either.

Let me know if you can think of anything else.

It's possible that the heatsink has always been crooked- maybe UPS had a hand in it when it was delivered initially.

Ok so should I take the whole thing out and check if it's crooked? Will it be obvious or really hard to tell? How can I adjust the thing? Will I need to take it off and then reapply the heatsink and fan again with thermal grease? let me know and thanks for the help

If you haven't had your Heatsink off, then your probably the victim of the Intel Thermal pad ("Intel heating pad", to those of us who have reason to hate it.)
Remove your heat sink and use your finger-nail to scrape it off. Then use alcohol to clean the CPU and the heat sink.

Then go to Radio shack and buy a tube of their heatsink Compound. apply a thin layer on the CPU (just the raised portion) and remount your heatsink. Buying an Alpha Cooler wouldn't hurt your temps any either.

You will probably need a good, small, pair of needle-nose pliers to remove your heat sink as the clip can be a bit stubborn

are you sure you got mbm set to read the right type of temp probe? go to the home site for mbm and look up your mb. it will tell you how to set up the right probe
