different ways to get rith barbs on heater cores?

Hi guys,

I was just looking for a few tips on how to replace the right sized barbs on the heater cores. the 5/8 should be ok with 1/2 inch tubing since I can probably use hot water to get the tubing on that thing, but what do you guys used to mod the 3/8 ? I know the best way is to sweat a metal barb on there but I have no access to equipment for this and would like to hear other alternatives that people have used.

Well on my 1986 Chevette heatercore I boiled the tubing and slid it over both the 1/2" and 3/4" barb. I first tried a 1/2" by 3/8"NPT screwed in then marine gooped around it and it leaked so then I tried the same barb with JB Weld and it leaked too.

Well how come? Didn't you seal it properly?
I used Epoxy on my homemade res and it's working prefectly.

so you actually slid 1/2 ID tubing over the 3/4" ? What kinda tubing did you use and have you had any leaking problems?

I stretched my 1/2"ID 1/8" wall Clearflex 60 over the stock Chevette barbs as well. I boiled the tube ends and then forced them over the barbs. On the 3/4" barb, I had to stick a pair of pliers into the Clearflex and open them in order to pre-stretch the tubing a bit. I used the spiral steel hoses clamps and have not had any leakage at all.

I'm using 1/2"ID 1/8"thick wall ClearFlex60. It was a pain to do but you can do it.

Yes I would recommend sliding the tube over the barb by boiling. I think installing babrs take longer(cure time) and restrict flows to the HC if you use barbs made for 1/2ID tubing.

I have clearflex60 1/2ID with 1/8 wall...

Just incase you think it might be impossible and give up... heres a pic to give you an inspiration... YOU CAN DO IT!!!!
