AGP speed question...

When a video card says it supports VGA 8X, does this also mean it supports 4x? My mobo only goes up to 4x

Better check the voltage yor mobo uses for the AGP slot, most AGP8x use 1.5v whereas some AGP4x were 3.0v I believe.

MOBO's that support AGP 4x (max.) will also support 1.5V and 3.3V, with the exception of a few MOBO's that ONLY support 1.5V.

So you should be fine as all AGP 8x cards support 0.8V and 1.5V.

MOBO's that ONLY support 3.3V are AGP 1.0 (1x, 2x AGP) MOBO's.

Also most AGP cards and slots are keyed, so if it isn't compatible it won't fit....there are a few exceptions tho, one of them is the Asus V3800 (I believe) which has a jumper for 3.3V and 1.5V, that card will fit in a 1.5V ONLY MOBO, and could ruin your MOBO if it's set for 3.3V.

AFAIK all AGP 4x is 1.5v and backwards 1x which is 3.0v u speak of

I think the only thing u have to worry about is putting an old 1x card in a AGP 8x slot.. because AGP 8x is only 4x and 8x voltages and something will short if u put a 3v card into a 1.5v-.08v slot

But, 8x cards today all can go in 1x slots still I think...

The drivers say u can =P
