Most retailers have the 74gig Raptor as an OEM item and only list a 1 year manufacturer warranty in the description. These drives are supposed to have a 5 year manufacturer warranty, right? The OEM version of the 36gig Raptor on newegg has the 5 year warranty listed, but for the 74 gig they have 1 year listed.

Can someone explain why most retailers don't have the 5 year warranty on this drive? Do any retailers have the 5 year manufacturer warranty listed in the description? (i think excaliberpc might, but that website has not been loading for me for the past 2 days) Is the 5 year warranty honored even though the retailer lists it as only 1?

Got a reply :)
Dear Rolando,
Thank you for contacting NewEgg.com.

You may notice for some hard drives in our inventory (depending on the make/model) that the manufacturer warranty and the NewEgg.com warranty differ slightly. Generally this can be attributed to the fact that all of the drives we sell are OEM and the warranty information the manufacturer is advertising is likely for the retail version of the same model. As such, we can only guarantee the warranty period that is advertised in the individual NewEgg.com item listing, not what is advertised on the manufacturer's website. Therefore if the item description indicates the drive has a 1, 3 or 5 year warranty, NewEgg.com will honor the warranty even if/when the manufacturer will not because some companies will not directly serve the end-user. We invite you to call the individual manufacturer in question for confirmation, if you so desire. Please click here to view a listing of all the manufacturers we carry and their contact information.

Who cares about NewEgg warranty anyway. WDC will honor the drive for five years. For those that have one, use WDC's product warranty check status feature. You'll see its good for five years. WDC pays for shipping both ways too.

Most hard drive manufacturers have lowered their warranties from 3 to 1 year on new drives. As hard drives get faster, there seems to be a higher failure rate(IMO). Best way to determine the actual warranty is to visit the manufacturer website and check.
