Tried clearing the CMOS, now nothing happens. The fans turn on, I can hear the HDD spin, and the led on the monitor blinks like the computer is turned off.

posts into bios, wont load windows

kraigc curious to know if you got that Asus mobo to load Windows and if so what you did to get it to load? I just bought a P4P800 and installed it and it post into BIOS but wont load windows XP Pro; previously I had a mobo with a 648FX chipset on it; I tried uninstalling all of it's drivers in Safe Mode before installing the P4P800 but that proved fruitless so now I'm thinking fresh install of Windows XP pro is the only remedy. Thanks in advance!!!

BTW i dont think its a difference in chipsets b/c i just went from a 845 to a 865 so i dont see why that wont make windows not load.

and are you guys getting the blue screen?

could folks be a bit more specific about "not be able to load windows". What's the exact screen you get halted on?

Hey all I just had another thread of this going and I got some answers

Apparently it is a chipset problem. You need to install the new drivers for the new chipsets and the only way to do that is while installing windows. So you can either install an additional windows with the new drivers, or - like im gonna do - format the HDD and install.

wish i new this last night woulda saved me a head ache or two
:P

Okay, kraigc its either video or ram please check them and if possible please reseat ur ram and ur cpu and lemme know

Cold_PhyrE, the reason ur windows xp is not booting because windows xp is not plug and play, you have to reinstall the os itself, there is a way by updating some of the drivers BUT i prefer to format, its faster that way

btw, when i said "not plug and play", u cant just move ur hdd on any cpu.

......and please run MEMTEST86 before trying anything. It eliminates the ram if you run into problems. It should always be done before a clean install........

Here's kraigc's response to my earlier post which I received from him via PM...

"I had to do a format and reinstall of windows. A repair install MIGHT work, but I was due for a format anyways. Hope this helps."

Kraig

In response to bardos question...

"could folks be a bit more specific about "not be able to load windows". What's the exact screen you get halted on?"

After the BIOS posted up popped a black screen with white letters saying "We appologize for the inconvienience but windows did not start successfully. A recent hardware or software change might of caused this....." and then there's 5 options to choose from; "Safe Mode, Safe Mode with networking, Safe Mode with command prompt, Last Known Good Configuration and finally Start Windows Normally" None of the options I chose would load Windows; the closest I got to loading windows was when I chose Safe Mode which when I did Windows began loading the drivers like it usually does but suddenly stops and restarts the PC and I'm right back where I started. So apparently I'm going to have to go thru the friggin hassle of reinstalling Windows if I want to use that new P4P800 mobo; oh the dues we have to pay!!!!

Here's some data from my experiences...

With a mobo change, sometimes a repair install over a previous instalation will NOT work and you'll get a blue screen or exactly the behaviour described by Barnacle Bill: the endless loop.

I have been obliged to reformat my system drive a couple of times. One idea I have NOT tried is to install the chipset drivers on the hard drive BEFORE doing the hardware change and the repair install.

.......you really don't need to reinstall all the time. Try booting off the WinXP disk - choose new install-the second time it asks choose repair - it will reload windows on top of the windows you have now just making it default again.......

yeah but that process will only overright files and leave the old system/driver files and there is no way to clean it, specially the ones in the registry, i havent found a software that cleans it 100%
