Thermal Probe Location and HSF placement...

I am wondering how to go about installing a thermal probe diode on an athlon XP processor. I plan to do this but i have a delimia. A friend of mine tried to install one on his AMD processor but it prevented the HS from making contact with with the core (the mobo would not boot and when he went to re-seat the proc the thermal grese had not been touches, after removing the sensor it booted properly and the HS made proper contact [thank god for the idiot-proof Abit NF7-S]) How would one go about mounting a processor probe on an AMD with out frying a processor?

How about under the CPU? I know that my HSF instructions told me to mount it directly under the die.

thats where i have my probe located now, underneath the cpu.

I get a 10c difference from that temp to the temp the bios displays so i dont know which one is more reliable.

Is the mobo temp probe located at the bottom of the CPU or is it reading the die temps. If you don't already have it, I would download MBM 5. It's the best way to get accurate temps.

actually software isnt that accurate. Mobo temp sensors are notoriously innacurate and you have to have the software programed right to even be in the correct ballpark. I also woudl be interested in hearing how accurate temperatures from under the core are.

If you like I can provide you some links and a few tips on using the Compu-Nurse style temperature probs if you have not been convinced that they are usless...I personally have the Lian-Li T-4 in all three of my computers...Software and BIOS temperatures are IMHO not anywhere as good as the temperature probes...But that is just me...I will look around and find a article that will show you how to mount one...I have pictures of all this because I was going to post a thread about how to mount one...But every time this comes up everybody jumps on it like you have to be stupid to want them...It will take me awhile to find it...Article has to be 2yrs old...

Here are a few pictures that I took last night showing how I mount the probes off of a Lian-Li T-4 temperature monitor rack on a AMD processor

First I take a pair of scissors and cut the end of the probe off to get it closer to the core of the processor...Then trim the black insulation back so it does not go over the processor.

Be careful when trimming the end not to expose or cut the probe and trim enough of the heatshrink back so it is not over the processor...Take a piece of Scotch tape and stick it to the probe...Then cut it so that it will not touch any bridges...The idea is to get the probe as close as possible to the core...Here is what it looks taped to the processor:

Cool beans, but what about for a P4 chippy?? i had the same question and i need to position my two temp probes somewhere too ;p

How should i do my cpu probe and where should i put the other probe for case temp?

I have a P4. I mounted my thermal probe under the CPU. I use the TT Hardcano that came with my Xaser III Case. It reads around 2C warmer than the Bios reads. I use the infamous IC7 mobo that people claim the temps are off, but IMO they are almost right on, if not a little less than what the real temps are. I get around 55C Full load on the Hardcano and it shows around 52C-53C in my bios and speedfan.

Actually the first picture from Shroomer at Extreme Overclockers show you how NOT to put one on...If you look at that picture it has the heatshrink, insulation, whatever you want to call it hanging over the processor...And the tape is covering some of the metal contacts on the processor...Those are the two things you have to watch out for...Another big one is what side of the processor you mount it to...If you have a clip on heat sink then you really cannot mount it on either side of the heat sink where the clip goes on the cpu socket...You could mount it on the side where the first clip goes on the socket, but the other side where the heat sink is usually machined down is a no no...And if you have heat sink that has the stand off's and is screwed to the motherboard the side that has the "Socket 462" is a no no...
