Chieftec HPC-420-302DF or Fortron FSP350-60PNU ?

Hi all,

Which one would be the better choise ?
Both cost 50 Euros here.

Chieftec HPC-420-302DF 420W (seems PSUs with the same part number from Enlight, HIGH POWERŪ and Thermaltake are all made by Sirtech)

+3,3 V: 30A
+5,0 V: 40A
+12,0 V: 18A

+5V +3.3V combined output 220W

or

Fortron AURORA FSP350-60PNU 120mm fan 350W (Sparkle PSUs are also made by Forton)

+3,3 V: 28A
+5,0 V: 30A
+12,0 V: 16A

+5V +3.3V combined output 220W

Do both have adjustable pots ?

System will be:

Barton 2500+ @ 2500MHz
Thermalright SLK-947/adjust. Enermax 92mm or SLK-700/adjust. 70mm TMD
DFI NF2 Infinity
1GB DDR400
Radeon 9800 Pro
2x 7200 rpm HDDs
DVD-ROM
DVD-RW

that chieftec psu u are talking about is wayyyyy over-rated it says that the combines output of the 5v and 3.3v is 220w, while the amps on each line are like super-sized whoppers (they are totally un-true) wattage is measured by voltage x current (amps) the psu says the actual output for the 3.3v + 5v is 220w, but when u measure 3.3v * 30 +5v * 40a = 299w, that means the company is over-rating it's psu and making the amps on each rail look higher when the actual highest output is 220w, if they are amknig that up, what else do u think they would be making up?

i would say go for the fortron, its an awesome psu and they are very under-rated, the peak watage for the 350w model is 454w, while i doubt that the 420w chieftec will even give out 350w

I agree on the advice to go Fortron, however the 420w Sirtec unit in question has been shown to meet its ratings (at least in general) in the same Tomshardware test that gave the Fortron 350w its 454w figure: link

In terms of build quality and reliability, the Fortron is ahead of Sirtec and will power the system in question fine IMO.

Thanks for the replies, do you know if the Fortron has adjustable pots for the 3.3V, 5V and 12V rails like the 530W version ?

Thanks again

no, only the higher-wattage psus have voltage rail adjustments, like the antec truecontrol 550 or the fortron 530 that u mentioned

You should be "okay" with either, but the chieftec will give you a bit more breathing room on the 12v line. With that MB you'll be running the CPU off the 12v line. From your list the 12v line -

CPU = 7a
GPU = 4a (???? guessing )
DVD ROM = 1a
DVD RW = 1.1a
HDD = .6a ea

total of just over 14a, pretty close to the limit of the Fotron. I have not doubt that it will supply the juice, but as I said the chieftec will give you a bit more room.

I don't really think the Chieftech will give more room, simply because it's not built with the quality the Forton/Sparkle PSUs are built with. The Forton 350w is well known to be underrated, so I would definitely go with the Fortron.

i also agree that the fortron would be a better choice for ur setup, first that they are under-rated and so i think a bit mroe than 16a would be coming out, and secondly that i doubt the chieftec will output the full 18a's that its spec'd to, im not sure on the quality of their psu's

Look what we go here, seems that there is a new champ in town, hehe

Have you heard about the Tagan TG380-U01 ?

Specs:

3.3V: 28A (acutally 30.8A)

5V: 37A (36.8A)

12V: 22A (37.1A !!!)

Average Efficiency: 80.1%

It comes also with 2 SATA power connectors, has a very good quality, is quite and looks nice too, hehe

Here you can get it for 50 Euro. Ajump.com wants 65$ for it.

The bigger brother, the TG480-U01 costs 90$.

A German review at Computerbase.de

And a French review at Pcsilencieux.com

WOAH those are some massive heatsinks, anybody do any good reviews that stress it instead of just putting it in the computer and saying the voltage rails havent dropped

and is tagan even a good brand?

I'm impressed by what I've seen so far from Tagan, but I'll admit I've seen very little of them

I'd love to see what one can do under full load with a scope attached to measure ripple.

Go with the Fortron since they are like the most reliable power supplies around and can put out much more power than it says on the rating labels.
