2kpro - pio mode

Hi,
I have an epox8rda running win 2kpro.
the hdd is a maxtor ata133 80 gig fluid drive. I noticed that things seemed a little slow and low and behold the ide controller is set to dma if available and it defaults to pio mode. I ran the checking utility for the hdd and it is good. I pulled the cable and replaced with a new one (yes the 80 pin one).
What else can be causing this? the hdd is the only device on that cable and it is plugged in the end of it.
Help!!!
The bios sees the drive okay.

I just looked in the administrative tools and see a warming that the device has ‘old or out of date firmware’. What does that means to me and what can I do about it? It is a Maxtor drive and was purchased June-02.

Is that an Nforce2 mobo? If so, try installing the latest Nforce chipset drivers, as they include a set of IDE drivers which would allow the drive to run at full speed, if not already.

yes it is.
I found on the maxtor site that winXP will reduce the performance of a hdd from ultra~ to pio mode if there are more than 6 (six) events logged when there were crc errors. Since I have been running for some time with this install and played with overclocking quite a bit I was sure that I had that many events....and I also made the assumption that win2kpro had the same logging/disabling protocol.
I uninstalled the ide controller and rebooted.and reinstalled.....and I now have my dma enabled.
Time will tell!

Yeah, I had the same issue with my DVD drive a year ago. Was only reading at 2x and found out it was in PIO mode. Uninstalled the channel and all was (and still is) well
