I am wondering what the Best CPU would be for overclocking? i am going to build a machine just for overclocking and to Fold ;) but i need to know what people think the best setup for this would be?

CPU Type?
CPU Speed? (heard a lot about 2.8)
MoBo?
Ram Types?

I have a general Idea on the Cooling for the new comp, but the rest i have no idea.

Also, id like to stick to Intel if i can, and money is always an issue :)

Well if you want to stick with intel and money is an issue, go with the 2.4C. Most people get around 3.1ghz right out the box. Some guy on another forum i go to, had his at 4+ghz on water.

I highly recommend the 2.4c or the 2.6c processor. My 2.4c is running at 3.4ghz with air cooling and no extra voltage. I have had it to 3.6ghz but the memory would not run in synch so I lowered it until I can afford some OCZ 3700. Best bang for your buck is also going to be an Intel 865 chipset like the Asus p4p800, as the 875 chipsets are pretty expensive. Make sure you get some good PC3700 ram though and maybe even an aftermarket cooler if you want to get higher than 3.4ghz.

Bull****?

Here is his post.

Finally broke the 4ghz barrier!!!
D1 2.4c @
4.02ghz 3:2 1.650v Prometia
3.60ghz 3:2 1.575v
3.48ghz 3:2 1.575v
3.10ghz 1:1 1.525v
Thermalright SP-94/Panaflo 92mm HO
IC7-Max3
XMS PC4000 Pro 2.8v (2.5,4,3,5)
Hercules 9800 Pro 459/369
2x Raptor SATA 10k RPM RAID 0
3DMark01=20,695 @ 3.48ghz
3DMark03=7,195 @ 3.48ghz

I am blessed with an awsome 2.4c D1 that does 3.6ghz/300FSB on air all day at 1.575v.

Recently I hooked it up to the Prometia and broke my all time record and hit 4020mhz @ 335 fsb ram 3:2 @ 2,2,2,5 3.2vdimm!! @ -30c core temp. This was done with a PCI video card, as above 300mhz FSB, AGP seems to be losing lock on alot of boards. Also my PC4000 ram doesnt seem to like that 3:2 divider, and I used some Winbond BH-5's PC3200 to pull off that 4020mhz. What sucks is the BH-5's will only go to 233fsb 3:2, so I still haven't maxed out this 2.4c. DAMNIT I NEED FASTER RAM!! If anyone can tell me how to circumvent this 300mhz FSB brick wall let me know!

i dont think anyone doubts that a very very exceptional 2.4c can run to 4 gig with a prommy. i think our friends skepticism is directed towards the 4 gig oc with water cooling

ya, had my Cel [email protected], D1 stepping 1.6vcore and stock hsf ( 43 idle and 51 load ) but with 128 cache it still couldn't touch my roommates P4 [email protected] in pretty much the same system.

I'd say the P4 2.4c being almost the same price as a 2.4b is the way to go and from what I've read on the forums they'll overclock very nicely with very little in the way of expensive cooling.

Why hasnt anyone suggested a Athlon XP. such as the 2500+ Barton.
A 2500+ Barton along with a Asus A7N8X dlx can be had for less than 200 dollars. 512mb of memory to start and your still under $250. Many people have had much success with this combo. Stable and fast.

Well, it's nearly impossible to get an unlocked 2500 nowadays. Back when they were all unlocked, yeah, the 2500 was a great overclocker. 2.4-2.5GHz on air. Same deal with the 1700 DLT3C chips. Now, you can't find either. The only real decent AMD overclocker is the 2100 Tbred B IMO.

hmm..

To sum up, Unless you can get an unlocked DLT3C chip of the 1700+ 1800+ or 2100+ variety, buy a 2.4C Get a M0 stepping if you can, and a IC7-G or IC7-MAX3 if you can afford it. You wont regret it, methinks.

Im after a decent barton to go with my NF7-S v2.0
But i like most ppl are having trouble getting hold of an unlocked one !!

I vote Barton !! 2500+ Or up .
