Question What's a good fan controller?

I might be getting a fan controller. So i was looking online at them. So two questions, what is the difference between a baybus, rheobus, and are there other types of fan controllers?
Also, if i get a rheobus, how many watts per channel should it output?

thanks all,
Kevin

If I remember correctly ... a "baybus" can use
either PWM or rheostats to control the fan speed.
A "rheobus" uses rheostats.

Usually the PWM are desirable as they create less heat
and can handle more amps.

(PWM = Pulse Wave/Width Modulation)

I have a Vantec Nexus 201(18w per channel) and a PWM Noise Isolator(20w per channel) and both are nice controllers. The pwm also has two on and off buttons for CCFL's.

oh yea the sunbeam also can be turned completely off. but unless they fixed this i think the sunbeam undervolts by like 0.4volts as in 12v is really 11.6v

Hey thanks a lot guys, 3.5 or 5.25 doesn't really matter, i've got atleast one bay of each open so whatever. I'm leaning toward the noise isolator, because i've got 8 case fans, and controlling 6 would be nice. I'm not sure what i would hook up to the power buttons, since i don't have any lighting or really any interest in doing something like that, but the price is good.

If anyone has any other suggestions that'd be helpful, thanks.

I have the sunbeam controller and I like it a lot. It does slightly undervolt (11.7v), but that's ok for my purposes. The lights change color from red below 7v to blue above 7v, so you can visually see if your fan is running or not, since most fans need 7v to start. The part that I like about it is that it is cheaper than the Vantec, and I've never heard of anybody having any problems with them.

I've heard many people say that the Vantec emits an annoying buzzing sound at low voltages, but since I don't have one, I cannot cornfirm this.

Also, the Sunbeam Rheobus doesn't actually use rheostats, it's just a name.

My vote is for the Vantec/Nexus 4 fan controller. At 18 watts per control it's a great value. I'm controling 6 fans and still have room to move

I'm rather fond of the HardCano that came with my XaserIII case. Not sure of the wattage but it seems to work well, running all seven(thermaltake silent) fans off of it and no problems yet.

Sunbeam

If you don't mind the large size go with the Sunbeam, no noise at all. I've tried the nexus and the things squeels like a pig.
The Sunbeam rocks. Got it at Directron. Less than the Nexus.

The picture on this link is old, the unit shipped had the updated printing on it, not a big thing but looks better. The Leds are really bright though, and as mentioned change to red when you turn the fan down, and you can turn the fan completely off.

I have a vantec nexus 3.5 i like it except for the fact that you can't turn the fans completely off.

the aerogate ii is a little expensive for me.

I've been thinking about it and this should have been my first question, but why do i really need a fan controller, sure i have a ton of fans, but the only one that's loud is the one on my cpu (60mm ys tech high output) so i assume i can't really slow that one down, so would i really benefit from a controller, or should i just save my money and get the hsf i'm debating on.

I have the Enermax which I got as much for the 4 temp probes as for the four fan controllers. The controllers let me tone down the noise on the two 120mm fans on my heater core. The temp probes come with little plastic covers on the wire ends that can be cut off so the probe can be taped in awkward places like on the side of the cpu core, mosfets, not to mention nb, sb. Works silent and well.
