my new amd computer

Abit NF7-s V2
Barton 2500+ retail
Radeon 9800 pro 128mb
aspire x-dreamer w/included 350w turbolink psu
Geil Value Series 184 Pin 512MB DDR PC-3200 w/heat spreaders

How's that? All together it's gonna cost me $506, which should fit me quite nicely price wise considering shipping (I only have $519). Does this computer look all right, and do you think I might be able to get a few 100 mhz overclock on this thing? I realize the psu blows and the ram isn't exactly stunning, but what can I expect w/$519 ?

Most 2500s will do 2GHz on default voltage so I'd say it's possible provided your RAM will allow it (which it should). What HSF are you using?

I've been thinking, I can wait a few more weeks, and get an antec lan boy with a fortron 400w psu, but is that worth the extra $86?

it should make 2-5C difference depending on the lap job, and how bad the surface was before lapping

You would be much better off getting an aftermarket HSF. The stock is only rated for well stock Once you start pushing your proc the stock HSF will have a very hard time dissapaiting the heat. You should also wait to get the 9800 until after the new cards come out. The prices will definatly drop at that time if not soon after.

I found an "ATI 9800 pro 128mb" for $217. Since you are telling me to wait, how much of a drop will we see when the new cards come out?

Usually you can expect drops from between $20 to $50. I would take a guess and say the 9800Pro that you are wanting to get will probably drop near the $20 price mark. So that would make it $197. I know $20 doesn't sound like much. But that could get you some better memory. An aftermarket HSF or a more reliable PSU.

Another choice is watching the NewEgg refurbs for a 9800Pro or a 9700Pro. I've seen the 9700 for around $170 and the 9800 for around $180. I'm currently using a 9600Pro from Sapphire that I got off the refurbs. Right now I'm running it with a modest OC of 452.25 Core and 351 (DDR 752) Memory. I know it has more in it. I just haven't had the time to test it out for higher clocks.
