Is this a correct way to do a test boot?

Have an asus p4c800 e deluxe with a 2.8c equipped with a 92mm tornado fan. I was going to do a test boot with just the motherboard, cpu, memory, and video card. Will this work and give me post if any errors in components are present?

It will let you know that all the critical system components are working (but not necessarily working properly).

It will boot until it tries to load the OS. If you have a floppy drive you could boot to DOS.

great i have everything but my vid card and xp pro and i'm using the vid card out of this cpu. any recommendations on booting from floppy in dos.

You can grab Memtest86+ (www.memtest.org) to test your RAM. Or you can get Overclockix (google for it) and run Folding/SETI/Whatever @Home until you get the rest of your system. You could even use Overclockix to browse the web 'n stuff (I think).
