Here's the deal. I have this problem and I need your guy's help in figuring out where the problem is orginating from.

When I restart my computer, the BIOS doesn't seem to recognize my CPU. (I hear the short blip and there is no CPU posted on the screen) However, when I hit the reset button on my case after it fails to load like this, the computer starts up normally.

This is a really weird problem and I have no idea what could be causing it. My friend who can usually help me out with stuff like this doesn't know what the problem is either.

I need you guys to help me troubleshoot this problem. Can you guys give me some steps to take to try to figure out what the problem is? That is to say; help me to narrow it down to the motherboard, PSU, CPU, whatever.

Thanks for your help.

Oh yeah,

I have all the latest motherboard drivers and have updated my BIOS to the latest release. I am running Win 2k Advanced Server with SP4 installed.

I've had the same problem when overclocking just a bit too much. Try backing off a few MHz. If that's not the problem, I would RMA the CPU and/or motherboard. Good luck!

There should be an option in the bios to disable quick post. Try that.

What PSU do you have? I've also heard of boards that have draw a lot of power taking a couple trys to start up. The first attempt draws too much current and doesn't work properly, but chages all the caps, so when you hit restart the initial current draw isn't as large. I have not actually seen this, nor can I vouch for the accuracy of the explanation of the cause.

Guys, thanks for the input.

I am not overclocking, so that isn't the problem.

I think Gnufish's explanation might be valid.

I will try to swap out the PSU and try it with my friend's.

If that doesn't work, what is the next step??

i had the opposite of u, mine would not start up properly when i hit restart, for some stupid reason it wouldn't load up my hardrive and graphic card, turns out it was the PSU, so i change my case and it's fine now :)

I've tried my friend's PSU and also his CPU and it still does the same thing.

Here is the weird part. I get the error blips and there is no CPU posted on the BIOS screen whenever I restart from windows, but now it will still load up as normal.

However I still get the random shut down from time to time with no warning, and no error screens in windows when I start it up after one of these random shut-downs.

It's weird because when it shuts down the screen goes blank and the fans all shut down, but the light on my case still shows it as being switched on.

Who knows...

Can I be sure now that it is my mobo which causing the problem??

try checking all the switches and jumpers on the motherboard against the manual - could be you have something out of place.

I hadn't thought of that. I'll try it.

What PSU did you have, what PSU did he have? If they were both no-name PSU, swapping them would not necessarily have fixed the problem.

If you clear the CMOS and try o boot at default settings, does this problem still occur?

It was also a no name PSU, but I really don't think it is the PSUs fault, I shouldn't need anything more that 300W with what I am running.

I only have a Radeon 7000 for now.

And reseting the BIOS or CMOS didn't do anything, that was one of the first things I tried.

Thanks for your help though, I RMAed the board today....
