Cant flash upgrade MSI CDRW drive

I got an MSI 8348 CDRW in a shop clearout of old stuff which shows in BIOS and spins up ok but wont read CDs. I tried to flash upgrade it with the MSI windows flash utilty but it wont have it, I get a message 'This firmware cannot be updated' . I also tried DOS based flashers for the same series of drives but they come up model does not match. That may be due to the fact there are 3 possible models it could be according to the part number on teh sticker but 2 of those drives flashers are DOS based and are the ones showing as model not matching, and the other is the windows based which is the one i mentioned.
Basically has anyone seen a similar problem or have a possible solution? The PC is the one in my sig. TIA for any answers.
