If you have two hard drivers, let's say one's a 20gig and another's a 40gig the only way you could use them in a RAID 1 (Mirroring) array would be to only use .5 of the 40 gig one correct?

From my understanding, that is correct - the second half of the larger drive will likely go un-used. I guess you can use it like that for now and save money for a 2nd larger drive
