Grainy images

Photography is one of my hobbies. This time I decided to fool around with black and white film. These images are so named for two reasons: One, black and white film has a grainy look to it that I like. Two, grain elevators appear in many of the pictures.

Linked due to size:

The half-mile grain elevator
Yes, it really is half a mile long. It's one of the largest grain elevators in the world.

More of the same
The other side of the elevator has a lot of smaller buildings near it.

Three elevators
The half-mile is in the background.

Three elevators, or one?
There's a third elevator hidden by the larger one. All three are connected by means of conveyor belts, so they could be considered to be just one.

Abandoned elevator
This one's been out of commission for a long time, but it's held up surprisingly well.

Sunset
Seems like a very typical Kansas view, doesn't it?

Railroad crossing
I like the clouds in this picture.

Different kind of railroad crossing
I didn't get quite the right angle on this one. You might remember a color version of this in a topic called "Fork in the Road."

Closeup of the crossing
Lots of square-head bolts here.

Trailer hitch
This is one of those things that gets hooked to the back of a semi trailer so another trailer can be towed behind it.

Streetcar rails
Hutchinson used to have a streetcar system. These rails are all that's left of it.

Rails
I like the vanishing point effect in this one.

Railroad crossing
This is a cropped and zoomed version of the railroad crossing image seen earlier.

Another railroad crossing
Different railroad crossing. The tracks are almost perpindicular.

Two railroad crossings
The previous picture focused on the left/front one.

Going nowhere
These railroad sidings were either never finished or have been mostly removed. In either case, that train you can barely see up the tracks isn't going this way.

Empty building
For some reason, there's a garage door on the second floor.

A strangely constructed mess
As far as I can tell, this elevator has been expanded four times (at least) in its lifetime.

More of the same
This shows the L-shaped layout of the elevator.

One more like it
I think the original construction is at the right and the newest construction is to the left.

Strange railroad equipment
I saw these on a rail siding near where I took the "dead end" photo.

Lots of pipes
I think the bins are used when loading trucks.

Winter sunset
The middle of nowhere.

Parked locomotive
The stripes look cool.

The triple elevator again
This is the same elevator pictured in the "triplex" image earlier, but at a different time of day. This time the view extends all the way to the ground.

Pipes and chutes
Same place, different angle.

The other side
Same place, different angle.

Crop and zoom of the previous image
Black and white film grains look interesting at high magnification. The star on top of the taller tower has lightbulbs on it. It's lit up around Christmastime.

Nice work there. I would bet that the gararge door on the second floor was put in so that they could hoist some huge machine up there. Got one of those in my town too. It used to be a print shop and that is how they got the presses in. If I remember, I will get a pic of it this weekend for you.

I used a Canon Elph ($75) and Kodak black and white Advantix film (about $5 a roll), so not much.

lol those are some nice pics for a little elph. If you like it enough then you should invest in a cheap 35mm SLR camera w/ zoom lens for like $400 it will take much higher quality pictures without as much of the grainyness. You definatly don't have to go all out like me lol, I just love it that much. I got a Pentax ZX-30QD camera body for about $200 at Ritz camera and a Quantaray 28mm-80mm Zoom Lens for about $150 at first then I expanded as my intrest grew. I now have a 70mm to 300mm Zoom lens also a large flash that has a range of 170ft and a small 4mp Digital camera.

They look pretty cool. I just have one question, and that's regarding the thread title....are you saying the actual pictures have the quality of being grainy, or that your pictures have grain related things in them? *so confused*

Great shots there!! The grain elevators don't do much for me (I like the later ones better though), but the stuff with the rails looks really cool!

Black and white film is so awesome.... If you compare the same image in color and B&W, the B&W usually looks better artistically because you don't have the color to distract you. I'd leave my digicam in B&W mode if I only didn't have to take random family pics

This old thread's comin' back for more! Translation: I finally finished another roll of film. Half of it was stuff for my mom, so there aren't as many pictures in this batch.

Bethany Lutheran Church
This is in Lindsborg, Kansas.

Up on the hill
The view is from on top of a hill outside Lindsborg looking southeast. Lindsborg is in the upper right. Look for two white smudges.

Up on the hill
Same hill, looking roughly west this time.

Up on the hill
Same hill, looking north.

Two elevators
The two white smudges in the earlier image were these two elevators. The gravel path used to be a railroad line.

The rabbit elevator
That's what I call it, anyway. The two boxes sticking out of the top are part of the machinery that takes grain up from ground level into the silos.

Steam engine
This is in a park in Lindsborg.

Pistons
Steam engines had a lot of moving parts.

The Old Mill
This used to be a working flour mill in Lindsborg. It's a museum now.

Down by the river
Some of the mill machinery used to be in here.

Floodgates
These were part of a dam that the mill used for power.

Just buy a camera, and start taking pictures! If you've got a digital, that makes it a lot easier since you don't have to wait to use all your film before developing.

Crazy Jayhawk: Very nice pics

abitavenger: if you do get a digicam get something with manual controls

edit: BTW for those that want to play: you can make a digicam grainy by cranking up the ISO.

example: (this is one reason my computers are getting a little out of date)
