S- Video Cable How Long is Too Long

Ok I have been using my girlfriends computer to play movies on the TV with. The whole house is networked so streaming it from my machine is note the problem. The problem is when I want to watch a movie on my computer streamed through hers she wants to use her computer to check email and or play UT2K4 it is starting to be a hassel.

My computer is on the other side of the room as the TV and I would like to run a long S-Video cable but it would end up being a good 20-30ft long. How much signal loss am I gonna get.

How much worse is it going to be if I use 3 10ft cables with adapters to exent the cable out.

Can you make the TV a seperate monitor so she can use email and you can watch at the same time.

I think you will need an amplifier for the svideo. http://www.radioshack.com/product.as...5Fid=15%2D1162

1 cable would not be that bad.

3 cables with 2 adaptors would be much worse.

I am not sure what exactly the signal loss over ft is, but isn't there a way to get the computer closer to the TV?

AFAIK anything over 6 feet and you will start to get signal degradation unless it is very good cable. I found a site that sells S-video cable longer than 10ft at Integrated Network Cable .

Thanks for all the links guys, I am going to check them out.

As for running the TV as the 2nd moniter, that is what we are doing now, and everytime she does anything I lose the full screen mode on WMP and I can almost tolerate that, but even with as much power as her machine has I can not expect it to play any real games while I am watching TV on her machine. Plus there is the sound issue. All of the sound comes from her Suround system. The only reason we use her computer is becuase it is sitting right next to the TV.

We would just swap computer stations and I would have mine set up over there but me being a geek I have dual moniters on a large desk with a 2nd hutch that holds my fax.printer/scanner and my 24" Server tower that sits beside all of my stuff with the USB HD, Wireless Router, Cable Modem and UPS. (behind my desk is snake pit of wires)

Needless to say moving my machine is not an option. I even thought of just moving the TV but that is also not an option. Jesh I should take some pics. Did I mention I have a bar fidge on the otehr side of my desk.

I guess I will just go ahead and buy a longer S-Video cable and see how that works.

One last thing, does anyone have any info on the new Wireless Media Adapters to go from Computer to TV. I have seen them advertised on Tech TV but it does not look like they do Sound and Video just pics.

Holy Sweet Deals batman those prices are really good. We pay about 40$ for a 25ft cable up here. I have never seen a 50ft or a 100ft S-Video Cable before. I think I am going to buy one of those right now and get it shipped up here. Even if I cant use it now, I am sure I can get a booster like cack01 said and I will use it later.

Nice link Sharkman. I've been in need of some longer cables and really hate buying from radio crack and have been just plain lazy and not researched anything on the web.

OC makes being lazy a snap!

My Setup

Ok I got bored today and wanted to play with my new WebCam. So what did I decide to do but made a video of my computer rig setup. It is my entire "Computer Space" It is really boring and is 9mb in size but it is hosted from a very fast server.

http://www.members.shaw.ca/captfieroofbc/Mysetup.wmv best bet would be to save to local machine. But the server can stream it if you like.

I was really impressed with the web cam, it is my fault for not getting everything in focus and for being so jittery with the cam. Oh and ya I do need to clean up. But hey this was just for fun.

I keep cleaning up the wires, then I get a wild hair to change something and I tear it all apart. I am so eager to get it plugged back in and see if it works that I neglect to re-tidy up the wires. I have gone though this about a 1/2 dozen times so far. I will post a vid of just my machine right after a wire cleaning day. Maybe in a week or 2 when I have some time to change things.

I am still going to upgrade to a new CPU, Video card and another 120gig Sata drive soon. (Damn I just added up that stuff in my head ouch)

You should take a pic of your setup and post it over in the O/Community > Your desk thread.

Sell your old parts in the Classifieds to help make up the money spent. You should be able to get a good penny for your Northwood.

Yeah...you're good for at least 50 feet with no amplifiers...
I am currently running a 50-foot s-video cable from my computer to my tv and it works perfectly. And its the cheapest one on the web I could find...it only cost me 15 bucks for the 50-foot cable...

So go for the long cable...they work great...

I noticed that you have a 350z logo on the front of your computer. Do you drive one?

Nope I did not even realize that until you said something it is simialr to the 350Z Logo, it is the stock logo that came on the case. It lights up red with HD activity and has a blue light up background.

you could try a s-video to cat5 converter for long cable runs.

LOL, since I started this thread, we have moved into a new house and my TV is now 18" from my computer. So my S-Video cable is a non issue now.
