Nova - Project Worklog (Updated! More pictures.)

I'm working on a case mod that should be done by Thursday! Yes, it will be done by then. I'll have from when I started Sunday till then to finish it. It was raining outside, so I really go outside to the garage to take pictures of the case... so I'll reveal the case tomorrow.

The computer I'm going to be modifying will have a soul purpose to just play MP3 files.

Parts gutted from my old Compaq 5151:
Compaq Motherboard
ATI Rage II+ On-Board
Aureal 3D Sound On-Board
AMD K6-2 350mhz
97mbs of PC100 RAM

All that:

The problem is that the case I'm putting this computer into is too small for the Compaq oversized non-standard AT PSU. So what I did was grabbed my HIRO ATX and do some wire splicing to create a modified Micro-ATX PSU that would be small and more powerful. Everything went smooth until I accidently cut the wires at the connector end of the wire. As seen by the red splices of annoyance! Its a mess and hack job for that one, but it works!

Sorry for no updates Monday. My cable modem decided to crap out. Oh, that and the motherboard lit on fire. I'm going to take the shotgun to it and buy a Mini-ITX for this project and unfortuneately delay it till the parts arrive.

Umm, how exactly did it catch on fire?
I think I'm speaking for everyone here when I say that I want pics of the burn.

One of the capaictors let out magic smoke. I've replaced it already and it boots, still have the Mini-ITX on order though.

Time for updates! Bear with me, might tell a few stories or two to go with the pictures.

Hardware acquired so far:
VIA Epia M10000 Mini-ITX
256mb DDR
Toshiba Slim line DVD-ROM (24x/8x)
Slim line ATAPI to IDE converter
New audio cable to replace the bad one.
Western Digital 5.25" BIGFOOT TX 8.9gb hard drive
The Case - 1996 Jeep Cherokee Classic, Navy blue and grizzly rims!

Need:
PW-70A PSU for Mini-ITX board

Finally, the case! The story behind the car's name Nova is odd. My friend wrote a story with a character with bubble gum pink hair named Nova. Coming home from Hershey park one day, my other friend sticks the tube of leftover pink cotton candy on my attenna and promptly named my car Nova. (Promptly making it gender confused as well.) Considering the cotton candy had only been exposed to wind on the way home, we figured it was safe to try to eat. It tasted like truck exhuast.

Now that friend that friend that had stuck that cotton candy on there isn't the friend I took to the prom and loved dearly. She's turned ice cold ***** and has banished herself to the firey pits below! She loved to wear these big boots and one day, since I still had the original audios coming out to the front seat, decided to stomp on them and flatten them. I wasn't too happy. Now time for wire hiding/management, replacing that wire with a longer one to reach the back seat.

(Damn too many images per post.)

This is where I will be putting the entire computer and severed heads of past girlfriends. Plenty of cable to spare.

That should be all for now... oh well... a friend was wandering the neighborhood and I decided to take a picture. Trust me, this is common around here.

Just trying to spice the thread up. Not going to have a boring work log here... hopefully.

Forgot to mention, getting 256mb DDR with the motherboard. Only paid $150 for the motherboard and RAM. The motherboard costs $150 new.

Via Epia M10000 comes tomorrow!

Epia came today! Hardware shown here is the Epia, 256mb DDR RAM, Toshiba DVD-ROM, and Toshiba 5.2gb 3.25" hard drive with adapter. The power supply is just a bench test PSU I bought for $5. Replaced the dead fan and bam!

There will be no LCD at all. Sorry to disappoint, but the cost is way more than I can afford. I would love to get a 10" Lilliput touch screen, but they are about $200-$300 each.

As for wiring to the car audio. Look at the pictures where I'm installing the RCA cables in the dash. I modified the inputs on the stereo so I can hook those cables up. Then just run the wires through the car to the PC. When I want to listen to MP3s, I flip a switch and tune the radio to a dead station.

Why, something they invented before the mouse. The keyboard of course! I started using computers before they came out with the mouse. I freaked people out at school when I would turn off the monitor and still use the computer.

It will be a 16 key number pad in place of a keyboard though. MPXPlay is a DOS MP3/OGG player that works wonders.

Thats a really awesome idea. Is the PSU run directly from the battery or is it powered from an inverter. (I know that kinda defeats the purpose of changing from 12 v dc to 120v ac then back to 12 v dc

I did fubar the 2.5" hard drive. I'll be installing a 5.75" Quantum BIGFOOT TX hard drive.

Suicidalmole, go check out http://www.mp3car.com/

Cooper, the PSU I'm getting is the PW-70A which puts about 120watts max. The PSU I have pictured is my testing and setting up PSU. Replaced two fans in it already. The used fan was dead and I dropped a small screw driver into the cover today ripping a fin off.

I have one of those bigfoot drives. Damn it's a pain! I only use it for backup and only when there's no alternative. By the way, is that a laptop CDROM drive? How does one connect that to a normal PC? I mean, they aren't standardized are they? At any rate, keep up the good work and don't skimp an the llamas!

They do have a standard ATAPI interface, but a specialized connector. The little circuit board screwed onto the back is like a breakout box. It takes the connector and turns it into IDE, CD Digital, CD Analog, and power connector.

Per request!
