So let's see, do any good ones exist? Do any BAD ones exist? :)

In the quest for Linux on the desktop, I think it would be nice to compile a list of applications for Linux that can play videos.

That includes:

.mpg
.avi (DivX for Linux?)
.wmv
.asx/.asf streaming
.mov (Quacktime)

and of course, DVD movies.

So, is there a Media Player or WinAmp Video equivalent for Linux? Or a bunch of different apps? Is DivX Linux-able?

Yup, mplayer is the best (uses a windows codecs packages called w32codecs). And as a secondary player I use xine.

I've had some trouble with mplayer. I had some downloaded videos (Stargate:SG1 episodes, wmv format) that would play terribly in them. I looked and looked but couldn't find a fix for it. Eventually I just booted into Windows once a week for an hour to watch it.

Also, by default mplayer doesn't install a gui. Fixing this was only a minor inconvience though.

mplayer does pretty much rock. :)

I have been able to view just about anything I tried with it; only exceptions are a few things that needed codecs that didn't seem to work right. And that was a while back.

mplayer can be troublesome to install sometimes: RedHat I had no problems, Fedora Core 1 was a pain and Slackware was a breeze.
