You may be able to salvage it but from what it sounds like, its dead. Try checking the bios and making sure its in the right boot order.

If you have a more than 6 part change between the computers, then windows won't work unless you repair it. If you try putting alot of your components into the pc you are putting the hdd into then it might work. (Windows is setup not to allow drastic changes to your system)

In the meantime go to bootdisk.com and you can create a WIN98 bootdisk of your own.

Is it a data drive or an OS drive? If it is an OS drive, you shouldn't swap it between different systems. In this case, you should be able to put it back in a system, repair the installation, and save the data.

If it is a data drive (no OS loaded on that drive), it could be a few things. How is the drive formatted? Fat32 or NTFS? 98 doesn't read NTFS as far as I remember. Also, make sure you double check the simple stuff. Was the drive on its own channel in the other systems but on a shared channel in the new one? Are the jumpers settings correct? If it's on a shared channel, are the jumper settings on the other drive correct? Which IDE channel did you plug it into in the system that it didn't work, primary, secondary, or possibly a controller card or onboard IDE raid controller?

The invalid boot disk error means that your partition tables changed to say that the disk is not bootable. This could have happened if you put your disk in another system as slave and XP decided that it couldn't handle 2 bootable disks.

Once you get a Win98 bootdisk, I believe you can make the disk bootable again by using FDISK to set the partition as Active. I don't know for sure if "Active" is the same thing as "Bootable", but if I'm remembering right from my old DOS days it should be...

If that dosen't work, the drive could be missing the nesscary boot files. Once you have a bootdisk, you can use the command "SYS C:" from the A:\ prompt to transfer boot files over to the hard drive. It should be bootable then
