Yes, you need it, or a thermal pad. You put it on the processor die, or heat spreader. You can usually find it at local electronics stores. Just ask for thermal paste or thermal grease as you said.

Actually, I dont think its required, some guy was running without it fine also a while back. So for better temps put it on there, if your temps are fine <60 its your call.

It is highly recommended. www.bigfootcomputers.com has AS5 and Ceramique which are the two best pastes. It is pretty cheap and will keep your temp down, for long period of time.

Interesting. However it IS needed. The temperature your processor runs at will have a direct effect on its lifespan. No paste is just plain dumb. I had a video card brand new in the box the other day (radeon 9200se) that had a HSF with no paste on it. The reason I even checked was because the video card was making some strange artifacts. Why would you even want to try and prove it. If you have a very nice heatsink with a good laping job, then it will be less noticible to leave it off but its not a risk even worth taking.

This is correct.
Thermal compound is used to fill the microscopic valleys and peaks on the CPU and the heatsink. If you dont use anything to fill these valleys and peaks. thermal energy will have a difficult time leaving the CPU, possibly reducing the life of the chip.

MCX462+T + Thermal Grease = Lower temps!
Very simple equation.

Thermal paste is a very good idea on any cpu, but, I ran mine for a couple of weeks without any. The temps will just be a little higher.

Why would you bother not to put it on? I can get a cheap packet of Silicone based paste for 99¢ at Fry's Electronics or any other large computer retailer so why would I risk it. Even the el chepo stuff does a better job than just a bare HS&F. Of course you wouldn't want to use it for Overclocking. AS5, AS3, or even Arctic Alumina will be a much better choice for Overclocking (I could only get ~50MHz more out of a Duron 900 with the Sillicone paste when I built my first K7 Box).

I would still not, under any circumstance run an Athlon without some sort of thermal interface (pad/paste). I've seen a couple burn up and it scares me

You do need it. People use Artic Silver as it is the best, most people have a 3-8C difference from cheap stuff. It does not cost much and will do many cpus.

The person that used the no oil in car vs oil in car was a pretty decent analogy. It will run but it will run much hotter till it siezes up.

If you are indeed in Vancouver. www.vibecomputers.com can be your best friend. They have AS5 shipping is less than 5$ or you can arrange to pu from noon to 5pm M-F at there distrobution center in Richmond. I can vouch for these guys. There prices are not the cheapest, but there Customer Service is 2nd to none. In most cases shipping is next day. Via UPS. I have bought fans, my new Antec 550w PSU and they have the coolest Modding Equipmnet. Heck that have a whole catagory on there web page for modding stuff.

Back to your topic. Thermal Compound is more like cooking on a cast iron griddle without using cooking oil to keep your food from sticking. You can do it, by why would you want to.

I would use some AS5 or Ceramique unless you want to have problems with the processor.

You can certainly use things other than AS5 or Ceramique as long as they're designed to be thermal grease. I certainly wouldn't use toothpaste, even for a short time. It dries out in ~2 hours.

Burnt_Ram - Thermal grease in the CPU socket? Perhaps you are refering to dielectric grease to avoid condensation issues?
