Im loving this. If it wasnt for competition then we would probably stuck witha lousy 400mhz crappy clock speed

I just hope they keep battling it out to see who is going to be faster then who and actually hit the 600mhz mark without the need of ocing the video card.

if this is true, afaik this still leave nvidia shouting about what its doing and laying all its cards on the table whilst ATI can still wait for their oppurtune moment.

The inquirer writers just like the sound of their own keyboards tapping...leave it till the the X800 XT and 6800 Ultra actual retail samples are about then things will be a bit more definite

If this speed race is true I see lots of cards dying due to poor case ventilation and improper cooling solutions. I'm sure they can go fater still but at what cost.

I'll believe it when I see the retail cards tested extensively tested against one another...until then....

Yeah, nVidia's won on paper, but I still wanna see the cards on the market. Just like HL2's an awesome game...but where is it?I've been waiting to upgrade and am drooling over a 6800 w/512m on board, but I want to see the reviews of an actual production model.
And yes, I agree, competition keeps the market healthy and leads to innovations. I'd love to crank up FarCry turned all the way up at 1600 x 1200.

great...so they send out a cooler card where the fan is acceptable. The they overclock their own cards and put the 5700 fan on it...

if nvidia overclocks their own cards, then the end user wont be able to oc them then.

Why not? Overdrive function on ATi's XT series automatically overclocks the card, so is there anything stopping the end user OCing manually? No.

And don't some MSI-made NV cards offer dynamic overclocking?

Yeah, that's true.

Take my Ti4600 for example.

It's stock core speed is 300MHz. If, say, they had decided that for performance reasons they wished to bump it up to 315-320, then that would be just fine, but I personally wouldn't be able to OC it much more, so if you are an overclocker, your gains would be decreased.

Man if I had this 6800 card,I would not oc at all.

For that much money I want it to last as long as possible.

Plus with the performance out of the box I wouldnt have to!

I Pretty much expected this for a while now . This is why they recommend a 480W powersupply , 2 molex connectors , a speaker to warn of low power and 2 slots . None of those things are neccessary at 400 Mhz . But some questions will have to be asked :

1/ what will happen to their yeilds ? In other words how many 'ultra' cards will actually make it into computers other than those of reviewers ?

2/ Will a 480W powersupply really be enough ?

3/ How will the thus far acceptable sound levels go when the extra speed is dialed in .

4/ What will the current draw and heat-output look like with the extra speed .

5/ Will pricing remain the same ?

many things are said when ever there is something new being introduced if i am not wrong Voodoo 5500 was the first ever video card with a molex connector and there were lot of flames on using the molex at that time, but what happened we eventually got used to using molex connectors with video cards, so lets see how we adopt to this new change being introduced by nvidia

as for performance is concerned only time will tell when R420 is introduced

If I had one, I would overclock as soon as possible. For one, I just overclock my stuff on principle alone. Two, if it can run faster, why not? Three, tinkering with stuff is cool.

Great performance out of the box? Always desirable. However, great performance out of the box + overclockability = sweet euphoria.

Ok i take it back about Nvidia being in the lead. All they are going to do is up the clock speed a lousy 50mhz and call it the ultra "extreme", What a bunch of crap. Ati is 525mhz core with just 1 molex connector. Nvidia is nearly 100mhz slower then the competition.

Clock speed isn't everything you know. Don't you find it interesting that ATi is now the one ramping up the clock-speeds. Wonder why........

Ati has been a core clock of 525mhz since it was announced and nvidia was the only one that was ramping the core just the once. Unless there was some info of ati before it was announced.
