Question on ATA100, ATA133 and buffer size

Im buying a HD for a cheap system that im building for someone. Im planning on getting a 80G hard drive from newegg. i see in the specifications they mention

ATA100 and ATA133 etc... with 2mb or 8mb buffers.

what would be better

a hard drive with ATA100 with 8mb buffer
or
a hard drive with ATA133 with 2mb buffer ???

does it even make any difference?

thanks
Laura

ATA100 with an 8mb buffer will usually give slightly better desktop application performance. Check the individual drive access times; lower is better.

ATA133 is more of a burst speed, where as ATA100 is more constant. As for cache, usually the 8mb will be slightly faster. I would go for the ATA100 8mb. Since the ATA133 spec isnt official, many boards dont even support it officially, but it will work at the ATA100 spec.

It's often the case (and is certainly true for Western Digital drives) that 8mb drives are covered by a longer warranty, as well as being faster drives for operating systems. my OS install oges a heck of a load faster on my 8mb drive, could be because it's bigger too though
