What is lapping

What exactly is lapping and how do you do it and... what does it do for you.

its sanding the bottom of the heatsink to make it as smooth as possible. this provides for the best thermal interface between the block and the core(or integrated heatspreader for p4). it can lower temps a few degrees, but i have no first hand experience
