new chipsets

I am planning on building myself a new system but i have been hearing about all these new processors, chipsets and graphics cards coming out and i am realy unsure about what to do.

like i heard about socket 939/940 and athlon 64,opteron and athlon-fx51 or whatever it is and i am sorta confused.

if someone could clarify what is going on with current technology
i would be happy.
