I could use some help

I and trying to set-up a new home entertainment system for my dad. I just purchased a Yamaha HTR-5640 receiver and a Toshiba DVD/VCR player to hook up to a 5.1 speaker sysytem and big screen Mitshubishi TV. I connected the audio/video out from the DVD/VCR directly to the TV. Then I ran the audio out from the TV directly to the D TV/CBL input on the receiver. I was told this would give me surround for both the TV and DVD/VCR, but they both still come from the TV speakers. The DVD/VCR image does come through at least though.
Can anyone advise me in any way as to what may work? If you need any more info let me know. THANKS!!!!
