Do You Floppy?

Heya guys,

Just had a quick question. In every system I've built so far, I've installed a floppy drive. Looking back, I've barely used the floppy drives since they've been replaced by either my jump drive, zip drive, or cd/dvd media. I'm considering not installing one in my upcoming system, but it just doesn't feel right, LOL.

Do you guys usually install floppy drives in your systems? Am I just being stubborn?

Thanks,
-Ish-

Why not a floppy is only $10 and you may need it for Raid drivers

A floppy drive is necessary for RAID drivers and comes in handy for flashing BIOS.

yeah floppys are really cheap anyway... so i mean, you might need it for various different reasons in the future that you dont think of right now... they are usually pretty reliable, so your burner software decides to be mean for a day and you need to transport a word doc... happens to me often unfortanutley... they are good to have in case

For <$8 it's kind of a no-brainer at this stage. Until they come up with another method to flash a bios without booting and load controller drivers during Windows installs, I'll continue to install them in all of the machines I build.

I yank mine out and put it in a drawer when I don't use it, since it just sits on the desk. I just stuff the cables back inside the case.

I have to have it for RAID drivers and BIOS, like mentioned, as well as 98SE bootdisks when I'm working on FAT32 disks.

I always put a floppy in. Not only cause you need it for bios/raid drives but there are places that have trouble reading cd-rw disks (ive had this problem once too often) and im not about to waste 698meg+ of cd space to transport a 1 meg file. If its important or its too big for a floppy then yes I will burn it. Problem with flash media and usb drives is not every computer will read em either. The problems you run in to when people dont wanna upgrade their computer. *shakes his head*

Actually, floppies use their own connector, sometimes called a "berg" connector:

Never touched a floppy in like two years. Some of my systems got floppy. Floppies just make your new pc look bad.

Sound like it's time for a bios update

(Man, I just kill myself!)

In all seriousness, though, floppies aren't quite dead yet. Anyone who works in an office environment will quickly regret not having them as soon as that one client brings in a critical must-have document on a floppy which is their only copy (yep, just happened last week).

Furthermore, as stated previously, you'll be "jones'n" for a floppy the first time your RAID array pukes and you need the drivers for an XP install/repair STAT.

A usb pin drive is a quick fix holds more too. though cant use it for SATA Drivers or bios update.... but u can hole those important work documents and those small files instead of using a cd

I did not read the whole thread so someone might have already mentioned this, but I find floppies usefull for partitioning utilities:

- Partition Magic
- System Commander

saves me a lot of time when installing Windows: I use them to format the drive and it takes only seconds - the Windows formating utility takes forever as it is doing a surfice scan.

also:

-Ghost
-BIOS
-Windows 98 StartUp Disk - you will need this sooner or later but it cannot help you if you use NTFS

and others
