Im looking to upgrade from a GF FX5600xt 256mb ... which do you think is the better out of the 9600XT and the 9800SE?

really, neither would be THAT big of an upgrade.

do yourself a favor, and spend the few extra bucks, get a 9800PRO. the 9800SE is a castrated version, and really falls short of the pro's performance.

I never had a 9800se but The 9600XT would definitely be a big upgrade from the 5600XT.The 5600XT is a much slower card than the 5600,and the 5600ultra being much faster than the 5600.

Anyway my 9600XT is better than my 5600ultra.Not much but noticable.Plus the Image quality is way better.

If you can get the 9600XT at a good price you wont be sorry.

A 9800 Pro is not a lot more then a 9600XT, so I think humanbeatbox is right.

On the other hand you could do it like me and save a few bucks if you feel like taking the risk and softmod a 9800SE to a 9800 Pro. But if you do you have te be aware that there's a good chance of it not working.
So unless you are going for the softmod, then stick to a 9600XT or a 9800 Pro.

9800SE < 9600XT < 9800 Pro

get a 9800 np or pro and bios flash that sucka to an xt. do not get this new 9800 pro that has recently surfaced based on 128 bit.

So the general opinion seems to be 9800 Pro, or if you are feeling a little wild and crazy a 9800SE :)

As I said I ordered an SE a few days ago.. We'll se in a few more days if it was a good or a bad choice :)

nah dude, unless ur really confident in the soft mod dont touch the SE. i'd take the 9600pro over the 9800SE any day, but see if u can put up the money for a 9800pro.

hehe, you can't really be confident about something that has a 60% chance of success :)

But you are certainly not wrong! If you dont't want to take the chance then stay away from it! :) ..maybe I should have aswell :)

Save the money and wait until you a) NEED a new card for games or b) the X800 series goes down in price. The 5600 should really last you a bit more anyways. I say save up and don't buy some POS :D.

How is a 9600XT >= to a 9800SE? The 9600's sucked. The SE would own it. Plus I've heard a lot of success stories about the 9800SE to 9800PRO softmod.

It makes me wonder if you could take the 9800SE, softmod it then give it the 9800XT bios. You'd be getting a $399 card for $152.

Yeah Chris, the 9600XT IS better :p

But the SE -> Pro -> XT is what I'm trying to do... still have to wait for the card and see... 60% chance to save a lot of cash :) and 40% chance to get a expencive 9600 Pro :)

9800 Pro > 9800 SE > 9600XT
9600XT is basically a 9600 Pro clocked to the max. With the 9800 SE you have much more headroom and have the ability to soft-mod if you get one with the L-shaped memory. Both a 9600XT or 9800 SE will destroy your 5600XT in performance.
