i was wondering using which is better the promise controller or the onboard ata controller.

Please specify which Promise controller and which onboard connection method? Are you planning on RAID?

Generally, I tend to prefer the onboard solutions over cards on current MBs, unless there are known performance of reliability issues. This preference is due to the onboard controllers being directly attached to the southbridge and not sharing the bandwidth limited PCI bus as far as IDE is concerned.
