Yes, the outages are a tad annoying, but give the F@H... guys some credit.
They know from this message board when the servers are down and for how
long. They have to prioritize their time and limited resources (as Vijay
has said MANY times).

Even though they're not getting the science they're after when the servers
are down, it's THEIR PREROGATIVE. It's their project - they can do whatever
they want.

We don't have any place telling them how to run their project.

I'm not attacking you, kkobra@t..., I'm saying this to all the
people that get mad at F@H... when the severs crash.

Easy for him to say ....................................Brett......... ..

Wow...very interesting. Thanks Brett! I think what a lot of us are doing and of course should continue to mention is running multiple clients. For those who don't know, you can find information on how to setup multiple clients here.

Yea but it sucks cause everytime I run a -local I still get stuck with the same server so I can't send my work back in so I have to keep installing new clients when I can't send my work off. It sucks. I am always stuck on the same server too

It would be interesting to see what everyone does to keep the work going when the servers go down.
Here's how I'm doing it and my 'puters are still folding at the moment.
I've been keeping the main folding client and two -locals on my main machine and the main client and one -local on the laptop (it's slower (read-intel ) and it's a laptop) and rotating them every morning, only running one at a time, without running EM. This way I have 3 fresh units to work on in case this happens but they still get returned on time. As it turns out one of my wu's managed to get sent in(diff server maybe) during this latest server problem and I got an extra one to crunch on. I have 2 1/2 workable proteins left with 2 others trying to phone home.
It only takes a total of a minute each day with just 1 or 2 machines and it keeps things flowing nicely. Couldn't imagine doing it with even a small farm though. Probably too much hassle.

You will lose that WU but they are rarely ever down for the days at a time. With luck they should be up tonight

ahh. you guys are just getting started. I'm somewhere in the 6 figure range now. mortgages, car payments, trips to Europe, did I say mortgage, student loans. oh yeah. mortgage. The end is in site if I can just keep the spending down.

Tithulta- I wouldn't worry about it too much, but if you want to know when you downloaded the work you should be able to check the windows file date on the work.dat (I think that's the one). I think that that file is merely read by the client and only updates when you get a new wu. You should be fine anyway. The actual limit is 4 days and the servers aren't usually down for more than 24 hours and they've only been down this long because it's a weekend and noone is there.

I had a little trouble getting work earlier but no problems in the past hour.

Anyone else notice that when we have problems sending and getting work a new protien usually comes into the mix within a day?

We've been getting a lot of new proteins lately. The HVT came out last week right after the outage didn't it? Maybe we will get something new.

The minute we joined this project it also became OUR project, not just THEIR project!!! I think we are entitled to complain a bit, but lets keep it in here.

Fold on... if you have work units!

Here we go AGAIN ! ! ! Sunday @ 5:50pm pacific time and the sever is not responding.

Their server's been up and down more than Bill Clintons' pants during his 8yr term in office.

I have another bbalpha wu and can't send it - .101 is not responding, I'm really getting weary seeing this. I assume this project really isn't that important if they can't keep their server up ~ maybe it's time to switch to another "humanitarian" project, one where the folks running it can keep their server up for more than the crew running Folding@Home.

I'm ready to pull the plug and save the electricity ~ which now costs me more thanks to the so call California Energy Crisis.
