Video card for using MAYA

what would be a good video card for using maya, and a fairly tight budget. I'm looking at the Sapphire Radeon 9600 Pro. would it be adequate with an amd64 3000+ system with 512 MB of ram?

If you can get a 9700, or 9800 and flash it into a FireGL (that's ATI's pro card). See here for instructions on flashing it. The flash will work with the 9600's but it'll be MUCH slower than a 9700, or 9800. The flash will also work with the 9500 but you'll only have half the pipelines of a 9700/9800, though the 9500 will still be faster than the 9600.

Yes, it should be more than adequate for just Maya. Unless you plan on playing games, video card does not make that much of a difference in most applications. ATI's cards are reputed to have slightly higher IQ than nVidia, though I think in 2D they're about equal currently. Also, the 9600Pro still holds it's own fairly well in current games, so you won't be stuck with a slow card should you wish to fire up a round or two of something.

yep the best way is to get either a 9600/9700/9800 and flash it to a firegl. which of the 3 ati card you should get depends on how much you plan to game. 3d is mostly cpu-intensive so you won't really notice a difference in 3d apps between a 9600 vs 9800.
