i think its pretty obvious...the top green right triangle only takes up one long vertical square whereas the bottom green triangle takes up two vertical squares, they made the top one look taller or something

How's 5 units base and 2 units height not the same? They're the same.

MY stab at it..
Ok... since the red piece is only 5 full squares long and the green is 4 full squares long. The remaining divisions of squares make the hole. To compinsate in equalizing the length/height.

look at the distance between the 2nd and 3rd horizontal lines which is what daliman was trying to say.

well, in the top one.

the distance between the 2nd and 3rd line, is the exact same, as two squares. Just doesn't have the line it in. measure it, its the same.

But, its still the same size. take out the lines, you get the same size.

Uhh.. did you measure it? I did. On my 19" monitor at 800x600 the green triangle in the second picture is undoubtedly smaller than the one in the first triangle.

do the math guys
find the angle of both of them
tan 2/5
tan 3/8
totally different inclines
its an evil trick, cuz u can photo shop it and it'll look right, u gotta do it with really cut outs to see the difference..

3/8 is a different slope than 2/5.

If you look closely you can see that the top hypotonues is convex and the bottom is concave.

take a peice of white paper.

either trace the green triangle if you wish, or just use the corner of the paper, put that at the top right of the green triangle. then with a pen, mark where the bottom of the green triangle is.

then, match it up to the other green triangle. they matched up exactly the same for me.

posted my last post, before i read these few others.

Good eyes. eh, its 2:30 am here. don't feel like doing math.

but, you are correct, the angle is different.

Hm.. the thickness of the line is apparently used to mask the change in slope, although by copying-pasting on top of each other in image editor, you sure can't tell.

tan-1 2/5 = ~22degrees
tan-1 3/8 = ~20degrees

not a lot, but enough to cut out a unit or two from a large triangle like this one

So only the green triangle is different, eh?
All other shapes are identical while the connecting slope line is not a straight line in the green triangle?
the picture is slightly distored, 1 or 2 degrees difference is hard to see on a picture as well, but thats all thats needed to leave that empty cell.

Thumbs up

Nice. Thanks.

Look at the upper red triangle height is 3, base is 8.
Look at the lower green triangle height is 2, base is 5.

So if you look at the upper and lower trianle as a whole, the lower left angle is not the same because 3/8 does not equal 2/5.

So the upper and lower triangles are not identical because the line connecting the base and the height is more curved for one than the other.

took the liberty of some image editing
made triangle (white line, red outline) made a copy of it and lined it up (pixel by pixel) to show how they differ
enjoy

The curves are so obvious now.

Korndog's post also proves how a picture is worth a thousand words.

Speaking of pictures being worth a thousand words..... When are we going to see compressions to get (good quality) pictures to only 7K?

1000 words is approximatly 5000-7000 charachters, which is 5000-7000 bytes. One would hope that we'd eventually find a way to compress pictures of arbitrary size (probably using fractals I'd think) down to only 7K of info so that all pictures truly are a thousand words. I wanna see that technology soon!

You should have put a warning on this thread for people like me who hate math! My brain hurts and now I hate math even more.

And you could put those pieces into any pattern and it would show some freaky distortion. Kinda like those "Only fit one way" puzzles
