Question Newcastle vs Clawhammer

I'm currently building myself a new PC with an AMD 64 3200+ or 3400+ CPU, but i can't decide which core i should get.

The 512Kb Newcastle or the 1Mb Clawhammer?????

Which should i get?

Could someone plz give me a bit of advice.

I am wondering the same thing. I can't decide between a 3400+ Clawhammer 2.2GHz, or a NewCastle 2.4GHz. I want to hit 2.6GHz on H20, so I can't decide which would be best.

I say go with the Clawhammer with the CG core. You should get 2.4-2.6 and the 1mb L2 Cache will do very nicely

edit: I have a CO core which was one of the first out and I get 2.35GHz so it can't be all that bad. I like knowing that I have that 1mb L2 Cache...btw there are some Clawhammers that only have 512k L2 cache so look closely before you buy to make sure you're getting a Clawhammer.

Where you can you find a CG ClawHammer? Would NewEgg or ZZF have a CG stepping?

newegg should have them...get a cpu with 1mb L2 Cache and it will be a clawhammer...just be careful to try and get a CG revision core, they OC better. I still like my CO core it's fast enough for me.

I am not claiming to be the authority here, but I have read many threads on different forums in the past 2 weeks, and the consensus I've seen is finding a CG Clawhammer is not easy.

my newcastle 2800+ does an easy 2500mhz out of the box on stock air, pretty good for the cheapest 64 bit chip

Hi guys, new here

Regarding the issue to find a Clawhammer with "CG" revision.

I live in Sweden and i got one yesterday, and strangly i found it at a local store. Usually I and many with me here in Sweden buy from online stores (datorbutiken.se, komplett.se, shg.biz, overclockers.se)
But these stores dont have it.

Anyway the one i got yesterday is an:

ADA3200AEP5AR

CAABC

I dont have much info if the stepping makes as big difference as on the Socket A, anyone that has this kind of knowledge?

Cheers!

How can you tell if it is a CG core before you buy it?? (or even after you buy it)

I've just bought a 3000+ Newcastle.
All I gotta do now is find a mobo.

is that typical of newcastle chips? 2.5 on air fairly regularly?

I dont know if its typical or not but I dent even need a vcore increase to do it. However my board does overvolt a little. I think it could go faster if I had a working agp/pci lock, right now I am having to use a 8x divider.

Oh...
I should do well then with mine. They are meant to run at 250FSB.

Is your board very stable at overclocking, or is your RAM limiting you?

interesting. this bodes well for people interested in a newcastle if your results are even slightly repeatable. i'd love to have 2.5ghz with stock volts on a stock cooler. means i could get alot more with more power and better cooling

thats quite curious about your board. i was under the impression the new via chipset finally did have agp/pci lock. apparently they failed again?
