Recommend me a HSF for my new comp.

Just got done building it (actually waiting for the HD in teh mail then will be done). Computer is for gaming but not hardcore. The mobo is a Asus A7N8X with a AMD 2600+ (barton). I hear they OC very well and am excited to try it out. Right now I just have the HSF that came with the CPU. I was hoping for some suggestions for more cooling since i have no experience with OC'ing. My case has 3 fans and then the HSF.

Suggestions?

Welcome to our Forum's

I would go with a thermalright SLK900a sence it is alittle easier to install also be sure and get a good fan like a smartfan2.

Good choice, but chances are he will not need such a hardcore HS. (given the abilities of that motherboard, and also the fact that the processor is locked).

I like the slk-947U at SVC for 19.99 + shipping! It will keep the barton around 32*c and around 38*C load with that mobo at stock speeds.

Gstegg, you hang at CAF?

thanks for all the suggestions and welcomes to the site. I am supposed to be getting my HD today or tomorrow. Once i throw that in the comp. will be up and running and i'm sure i'll have more questions. I'll probably order the HSF in 2 weeks so i won't be overclocking right away

another question. On the description of the thermalright SLK900a on newegg it says for Athlon XP 2800+. I only have 2600+. Still able to use it?

Yea, most of the ratings you would see for cooling are for much higher speed hardware. But thats a good thing. When overclocking, you will be producing temps that are usually way over what stock speeds will get you. So you are going to need cooling that will dissipate the heat for a much faster processor, or just a better heat sink.

The suggestions for the SLK900a are a really good choice, and add one more for me too. I am using the smaller SK7 that I dont think is being made anymore, but is still an excellent performer, just not as good as some of the larger sinks. Anyway, feel free to ask all the questions you need if you are unsure about a given area of overclocking, or just whatever. The guys and gals here are more than awesome, and will help you in anyway they can.

Thanks for all the help guys and gals.

I've heard that sometimes the CPU gets stuck to the heatsink sometimes and you have to pry it off. Does this ruin the CPU?

The only time I heard this happens is when you are using the A64's. good luck with everything.

Roger that. Its mostly because of the Integrated Heat Spreader. There's a larger surface area in contact with the heatsink's butt, as compared to the XP's, with only the tiny exposed core.

Or you could just say SF2 and be really short about it
