I just downloaded and installed Corel Linux 2nd Edition, and I can't install anything on it ! I want to install wine, but it doesn't work, same thing for Corel PhotoHouse (something like that) for linux.

What can I do ?

I had the same problem with Corel Linux V1. The only thing that worked for me was to remove the whole installation and re-install. Yes, it's a hassle but I think sometimes the Corel Installer doesn't install everything first time 100%. If that doesn't fix it, try to get a new install CD. That could also be your problem. Else download Slakware or RedHat. Niether have given me any problems with any Linu apps. Gimme a shout if you don't come right on any of the above..

your best bet is to buy a distro - the best are SuSE, Mandrake, Debian and Red Hat. Mandrake is the best for newbies

Corel is a good first step for somebody who has never had any experiance at all with Linux but it is no more then a stepping stone. It is to incomplete and inflexable once you start to learn your way around. Sometimes the high level of hand holding just gets in the way.

One thing you can do is a custom install of Corel linux that way you can select all of the packages. One of the problems with Corel is that the default install does not include many of the libraries that are needed to install/compile other apps.

I recomend either SuSE or Mandrake if Corel ends up being to limited for your use.

Well, thanks for the help ! I installed Linux-Mandrake (format, install), worked for some time, then the mouse froze and couldn't get it to work again ! So I'll just reinstall Linux some other time.

Thanks again !

Mandrake can do this on occasion. Did you play around with the mouse settings? This is usually when this problem occurs. What I recomend doing is make a backup of the configuration file for the Xserver before you play with these settings. If your mouse gets locked you can always restore the old file from the command prompt.

The other solution use SuSE, it has never given me a mouse problem and after installing the mouse wheel works in all apps as well, even lets me change weapons in q3a/unreal

I know in q3 there can be sticky mouse probs.

I think you should try another, bog standard, PS/2 mouse. It may be the mouse playing up.

PS SuSE is well better than Corel.
