I_am_Rambi writes "AMD has released the Sempron today, a release date that moved up from Aug 17th. Because of this move, some of the reviews that are out, will be continued later on. Some sites already have reviews including [0]Toms Hardware, [1]Anandtech, and [2]Tech Report. The Sempron, AMDs budget processor, is staged against the Intel Celeron."
[3]Jason Jacobs writes with a [4]review on Techware Labs, and Hack Jandy adds a link to a [5]review at HotHardware, writing "it appears as though the Socket A based Sempron performs abysmally while dollar for dollar the Socket 754 version levels every Intel CPU."

i read the anandtech review. i got confused. benchmarks say a celeron is faster than a barton 2500+???? theres no way on earth

WOW.. they seem pretty decent of a cpu @ that price and the fact it comes in a 64 bit version is cool too... and maybe the celeron did do better then the 2500+ because its clocked @ 2.8 ghz and that 2500 was @ stock.. and in 1 test it won by .1 soo dont get too hyped :D

wonder how long before they raise the prices on the xps and mobiles? I imagine pretty soon.....

it comes in socket 754, not 64bit. right?

and that 3100+ 754 sempron comes awfully close to the 2800+ A64, kinda scary. I guess an OC'ed A64 2800+ would blow it out of the way tho.

ah but look, the sempron is a CG stepping no one knows the capability's of the Sempr0n's OCing yet

Yea, but they lack two important things (the semprons) an extra 256KB of L2 cache and x86-64. Just read the front page, and see what people think they will buy next year. the Sempron gets almost non-existant attention.

If the Sempron is a CG, then the vanilla 2800+ with the Clawhammer core won't be able to touch it. Believe me, I had one of those POS 2800+s.

Well either way, I think it is a great move at the moment for AMD. They will once again regain the lead in the budget market, even if for a few months. It lets them worry about more important things like the fx chips, imho.

I think this amount of new chips, and specially like 3 platforms will only cause more confusion. Why not just make Semprons S754 ONLY(!!!) and call it a day? They're planning to release those for socket 939 as well...

who gives a care??? I work at best buy, and 99% of people come in and you ask them "do you have a intel or amd preference?" and they respond "I just dont want a celeron". Even my grandmother knows celeron's stink. My point. The market for budget processors is so small just let intel have it with the celery. Focus on getting A64's out. I mean, right now, all we have are 2 laptops with a64's NO DESKTOPS come on. I also look at it like this.
(hypothetical)
Celery and Sempron: $80
A64 - $120
P4 - $200

Most majority of people when they buy a cpu go middle of the road. The high end and budget cpu's get very little customer attention. So it would be wise on AMD's part to forget any budget stuff and just keep their attention on the A64. People will upgrade from a celeron to a AMD XP in 3 seconds. Why put work into that market??? I just think its STUPID on AMD's part. People are sold on 64 bit anyhow. There was a 45ish year old lady came in the other day and goes "im looking for the new amd processor" and I said "oh the 64 bit?" and she goes "yes, I want the new technology". Trying to sell a 32 bit cpu when for a few more dollars you can get 64 bit is gonna be tough and such a small market its worthless. More marketing will be spent on sempron than actual money made.
