6800 128MB better than 9800Pro 256MB in the $250~$300 range right?

The 6800 has only 12 pipelines rather than 16, and has only 128MB memory, so it's quite a bit slower than the 6800GT... but is it still a better buy than the 9800Pro 256MB, which is only $30 or so cheaper, right?

these 2 articles seem to suggest so, but I've been out of the loop for a while so I'm just looking for a confirmation. :)

Yes, the 6800NU will be faster than any version of the 9800 pro. I should of purchased one, but couldn't afford the extra 100 bucks.

The extra 128 mb on the 9800 pro is a waste of money anyway. Go with the 128mb 6800.

no you will need it in the upcomeing months, unless you like upgrading! be safe and get the 256mb version!

The 256MB version of the 6800 is not cost effective. You might as well step up to a GT.

I'd recommend staying with the 6800 128MB. From what I've heard, it's a great card for $300 or less and it's actually available, unlike the GT.

I have a 6800NU, and a GT. I also had the Ultra and have since sold it. The NU is a great card. It can play everything I have tried including FC, painkiller, perimiter, COD and misc older stuff, and I have yet to have any issues with it. The Ultra for me just wasnt worth the price tag, and I needed the money. Bottom line, the 6800NU is the best bang for the buck. I had a 9800XT that I had sold originally to get the ultra to begin with, and a 9700pro that was sold to get the GT.

Most people would likely label me an ATI zealot, but the 6800NU gets my vote as well; great performance and features for the price tag. A 256mb card really isn't "necessary" in my opinion. D3 will perform better on a 6800NU 128mb than it ever would on a 9800XT 256mb.

Get the 6800 quick. It is on sale at NewEgg for around 270-280 and the sale ends in a couple days. So get the goods while they are available. (plus its a eVGA and comes with farcry i think)

Actually, did anyone read the [H] Doom3 hardware review?

The 6800NU with "only" 128mb of ram thoroughly stomped the 9800XT with 256mb of ram. The 6800NU was found to be playable at high visual settings at 1600x1200; the 9800XT could muster high visual settings at 1024x768...

So much for "more ram = more better" ;)

Like I said, I had the 9800XT w 256 and I have the 6800NU and the NU would stomp it. It is deffinitly a worthy upgrade for the price. Most 9800XT's are still priced well above the NU. As far as doom, I thought it had something to do with the fact that the NV has ultra shadow and doom 3 really takes advantage of this. The NU over clocks well also. I have mine running at 410/805

Well yeah, the NV40 parts have an edge in D3 anyway given some special hardware support that D3 is capable of using (the ultrashadow capacity)

However, the 6800NU still holds performance crowns over the 9800Pro/XT in almost every other game too, despite the clock disadvantage. I think the 6800NU is probably the most compelling part to come out of this generation of video cards. That's high praise compared to the last two generations :)

Also the 6800nu kills(well not kills..) the X800PRO. And with the FX 53 test system there was hardly any difference between the X800XT PE and the 6800NU. Doom 3 was trully made for the 6800's. I bet we will see opposite results for HL2, but who cares its never going to be released anyways. Might as well wait for STALKER.

I have a different idea. nVidia is planning on revising the 6800NU chip. They plan on making a 12 pipe only, but tweeking it to clock higher to keep up with the x800PRO.

Maybe you should wait till then?

Its not very surprising, that the 6800nu beats the 9800XT...
its 12 pipelines against 8.... the 9800XT will never be able to keep up.
but a 128MB 9800 pro with XT chip is about 190 - 200$ which is way cheaper than the 6800NU. So buying this would be justified.
I'd get the 6800nu if it wasn't so damn expensive (in germany >350$).

The 6800nu here is around 280-300.

Despite what some of clowns here will tell you about buying a 9800pro and flashing it to a n xt, yes it is the more cost effective card in that price range, it will out perform even the xt's by quite a bit, especially with the same heavy over clocking required to get a pro flashed to an xt.

/e didn't read posts, just assumed something would be there about flashing pro's to xt's.
